TODAY (JAN. 08): Mya’s Leaving Motown
THE FACTS:
• In an interview with Starnewsonline.com, Mya reveals her plans to leave her label, Motown Universal.
THE SPIN:
Do you remember Mya? Come on, it hasn’t been that long. Well, despite her being a personal favorite of mine, she has never really been able to carve her own niche in the market. After leaving her former label, she joined Motown Universal with the hopes of re-energizing her music career. Most of the songs she released were awful, and her album has been pushed back several times. I’m guessing maybe Kelly Rowland switched cups with her and gave Mya her wack juice. In any event, Mya tells Starnewsonline.com that she’s planning to leave Motown this year.
Q: Are you planning on leaving your record label?
A: Yes. I’ll be leaving Motown Universal some time next year.
Q: Do you plan on signing with another label?
A: I don’t really want to sign to another label. If you end up funding most of your projects, why not distribute your own product and make 100 percent of your profits?
She makes a good point, though I’m wondering just how many people she expects to buy her album. Hey, if she wants to sell records out the back of her trunk, that’s her business. Even if she sells just 75 copies, the profits of those copies go to her. Maybe it’s not too late to head over to Broadway.
