TODAY (NOV. 28): Amerie’s Label Drama
THE FACTS:
• In a recent interview with popular UK magazine RWD, Amerie spoke candidly on her current frustrations with her record label.
THE SPIN:
Unless you use the two click discount to obtain your music, you probably didn’t know Amerie has an album called Because I Love It. Though Americans got a taste of the album via the singles, Take Control and That’s What U R, Because I Love It is only available in the United Kingdom.
When asked about her thoughts on how her label, Columbia Records, has treated her, Amerie responded with, “Er, you probably don’t even want to ask me that right now. That’s how I feel about it.” She added that it’s best not to ask her, because she wants to keep it positive. That and she probably still wants a deal at the end of the interview.
But, after the interviewer kept pressing on, the singer did say she feels that her album hasn’t performed as well due to her label not giving the project a proper push.
“Take Control was going good, so we knew we had to schedule the video for Gotta Work. But you need money to do a video, and by the time we got it cleared, it was late. They didn’t feel like that, but anybody with half a brain could see it was late,” Amerie told the magazine.
Amerie went on to add that she’s studied the business and told her handlers what needed to be done. She noted, “I get that everyone’s filled with good intentions, but the road to perdition is filled with good intentions. There should have been no gaps.”
I suppose she’s right, given the biggest hit of her career, “1 Thing,” only happened because she and producer Rich Harrison leaked the track to radio against the wishes of her label. Amerie might want to consider finding a loophole in her contract, or she’s going to end up cleaning up aisle five at the supermarket.
