THE SPIN (Daily Dose of Celebrity News): CELEBS OWING UNCLE SAM
Get into The Spin everyday as TV One’s online blogger, Michael Arceneaux brings you daily doses of celeb gossip and news.
TODAY (NOV. 21): Celebs Owing Uncle Sam
THE FACTS:
• A New York Post article has revealed Damon Dash, Cicely Tyson and Ben Vereen each owe back taxes to the state of New York.
THE SPIN:
I better not catch Damon Dash, Cicely Tyson or Ben Vereen camped out at some store for any Black Friday sale. A New York Post article entitled, “From The ‘A’ List to Owe List” (love the title), has published the names of a slew of celebrities who owe major funds to Uncle Sam.
Topping off the list is hip-hop mogul Damon Dash – who owes the state of New York more than $2 million in back taxes. The state typically issues warrants so that they can garnish wages and seize property. Fortunately for Dash, no warrants have been issued for him, so his Maybach sedan can rest in peace.
The same can’t be said for Emmy-winning actress Cicely Tyson and Tony-winning dancer Ben Vereen. Tyson, who owes $124,320 in back taxes, has had four warrants issued against her between 2002 and 2004. Vereen is behind $119,825, and he’s had four warrants issued against him between 2003 and 2006.
I aim to respect my elders, so I’m trying really hard not to say anything about Tyson or Verreen, but why haven’t they paid their taxes? Older people should know more than anyone else not to play with the government’s money.
YOUR SPIN: Why do you think these celebs haven't paid yet?
