TODAY (NOV. 12): Woman Claims James Brown Never Divorced Her
THE FACTS:
• A Georgia woman who claims to have married James Brown in 1953 claims they were never divorced and she wants to be part of his estate.
THE SPIN:
James Brown’s “The Big Payback” takes on a new meaning as time presses on. At last count, there were three people claiming that DNA testing proves James Brown is their father. A former back up singer also claimed that they were married, and now there’s a woman who claims she married James Brown 54 years ago, but never got a divorce.
Velma Brown is claiming she married the soul legend on June 27, 1953, had three children and lived with him for 17 years. She says the two separated, but never had a proper divorce -- even claiming the two kept in touch well into his last days.
Her attorney, David Bell, says his client is coming forward now because, "it's something that she had just never thought about."
I’m sure she thought about it the second she looked at her checking account. If Velma’s claims were true, all of Brown’s other marriages would be invalidated, and according to a New York Times article, her claim as his surviving spouse might have been worth $100 million -- too bad it’s not, as this same article found the divorce record.
It’s like getting all but one of the winning lottery numbers. So close, yet so far away. Poor Velma. However, there’s a child mentioned in the handwritten divorce statement that’s not on public record -- the plot thickens.
This is like a soap opera: As The Money Turns. Look out for eight more kids this spring.
YOUR SPIN: If she really does have a child by James Brown, should she collect? Post YOUR comments below.
