TODAY (OCT. 18): New Nas Album Not Named After N-Word

THE FACTS:
• Def Jam denies that Nas’ new album will be named after the N-word.

THE SPIN:
Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Bill Cosby can hold off their plans to jump rapper Nas. After stirring controversy with his last album title, Hip Hop Is Dead, rumors swirled that Nas was going to push the envelop even further, titling his new album the N-word. If you were wondering, it was the N-word that ends with an “A”. I’m not sure if that means anything, but just so we’re clear on which variation is being used.

Nas actually wanted to name his last album that, though he ended up going with Hip Hop Is Dead. So where did the rumors come from? Nasir himself. At a concert performance last Friday, Nas informed the crowd that his greatest hits album drops next month. He then told the crowd that he also has a studio album due out in December. That’s when he revealed to the audience the controversial title, then prompting the crowd to say “Power to the people,” saying the word is theirs.

However, his record label is saying power to the contract. The record label execs are telling the media that not only is that not the title of the album, but that there is no new Nas album coming out in December.

So what was the point of all of this? To get all of us talking, no doubt. Mission accomplished, though I do have a few choice words rumbling in my head about this stunt.

I suppose it’s for the best, though. I can only imagine the likely awkward moments ahead for our melanin-challenged friends who were going to flock to the stores in search of the album.
