TODAY (OCT. 12): Jay-Z Loses Arena Bid
THE FACTS:
• Jay-Z has been outbid by the Izod apparel company in the naming rights for the New Jersey Nets Continental Airlines Arena.
THE SPIN:
He dates Beyonce, has assets totaling hundreds of millions, and has managed the feat of being ageless in a genre of music that has long been plagued with ageism, but even Jay-Z can have disappointments. Indeed, the rap star, music executive and entrepreneur, and envy of millions will have one less thing to brag about this NBA season. Are you heartbroken yet?
A month ago, Jay-Z offered $1.4 million a year to have the naming rights to the New Jersey Nets Continental Airlines Arena in Meadowlands, New Jersey. So who beat out Hova? The Izod apparel company matched Jay-Z’s offer, but offered a marketing package in addition to the cash deal. The arena will be re-opened and christened with its new name on October 31st when the Nets play the Chicago Bulls.
I think I feel more sorry for Nets fans given I’d much rather go to a place called Roc-A-Rena or the S. Carter Arena than one named after Izod. While I’m sure this is a blow to Jay-Z’s ego, he’s still a shareholder of the team, and is still richer than me several million times over. He’ll live.
