TODAY (Oct. 5): Solange Doesn't Want Beyonce's Fame
THE FACTS:
• In an interview with Essence.com, Solange Knowles says she feels sorry for her sister, Beyonce, and doesn’t want her level of success.
THE SPIN:
What a difference a flop makes. After years of using her sister’s popularity to score collaborations with other artists, her own record deal, and film and television appearances, suddenly fame no longer matters to Solange.
I guess if my debut album sold upwards of 50,000 copies while my big sister’s debut sold well over 4 million, I would pretend I’m not that affected by it either. Or maybe the reality check that she’s doomed to be the Ray J to Beyonce’s Brandy has finally hit. Better late than never at all.
But, that wealth of knowledge hasn’t deterred Solange from continuing to pursue her musical aspirations. She said she doesn’t feel any competition between herself and Beyonce sister because they’re two different artists. We all knew that already, right? One is popular; one is the sister of someone popular.
When addressing her peers in the industry, Solange said most are in a superficial state where everything is about clubbing and buying drinks. This is the same person whose writing credits include “Upgrade U” and “Get Me Bodied.” She assures the interviewer that songs of substance, like those about society will be included on her forthcoming album, "Solange Knowles and the Hadley Street Dreams." Solange is primed to “Heal The World.” I can’t wait.
It’s a good thing she’s not shooting for Beyonce’s level of stardom. It’s healthy to know your limits.
YOUR SPIN: Is Solange backtracking or just being realistic. Post a YOUR comment below.
