It seems like the person is in denial about some kind of truth and is trying to hide behind the "mask" of oblivion. they don't want to "face" reality, so they are wearing another face, which is denial

That's a very profound picture. There's just so much behind it. No matter how hard she tries, the true her is breaking through. She tries to hold it inside, but time won't allow. I agree with T. She's trying not to face the truth.

Actually I am going to look at it in a different light. This painting could also represent the mask African Americans wear in White Corporate America and the assimilation we strive for yet were are constantly pulled back to our ethnic roots. That is why you see her "real" face escaping through the white mask.

I agree with Brittany, but I think it is about the human need to be like the majority, to fit in. In this society we are surrounded by people who tell us we are not the right color, not the right size, not the right anything and how we try to compensate for it. The woman in the picture not only has on a white mask but she has on red lipstick as if it is all part of the mask. She put the mask on herself, as if she took the time out to make sure that it covered every part of her face. This shows that is was voluntary. We try to change to assimilate into mainstream because who wants to be the odd ball out? But no matter how hard she tries to get away from her African lineage, she is constantly reminded that she is black. She struggles to keep the mask on but it wont stay on because the world sees her as black. Its about the struggle to be at piece with being different
