Teens Making Pregnancy Pacts Isolated Incident Or Far Reaching

Okay, so is anybody else taking notice of this situation? Do you think it's an isolated incident or are there more teens making pacts like this but nobody has noticed the trend? Remember when it was teens making suicide pacts? Seems as if teens at least have part of each incident right, forming a pact. They just need to form pacts that are more productive and beneficial to living a better quality of life. Take that same strength of numbers and work to solve problems rather than avoid them or create new burdens that they are unprepared for.

"What's happening in Gloucester is a microcosm in some ways for what we're seeing at the national level," says Bill Albert, chief program officer for the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy in Washington. "The good news is that we have made extraordinary progress as a nation [since the early 1990s] in convincing people to delay s*xual activity and delay pregnancy and parenthood. The bad news is that that progress seems to have come to a complete standstill and, in some ways, has reversed." (courtesy of Christian Science Monitor)

The fact that this recent incident of a teen pact occurred in a prodominantly white high school in Massachusetts resonates the fact that teens of all colors are facing the same life struggles and making some of the same kinds of decisions. Is it the education system that is falling short or is it parents and the values and support that teens are getting at home that is falling short? Something is amiss when teens think that getting pregnant together is a good thing? The idea that bearing a child out of wedlock has become sort of a fahion statement or a mark of womanhood shocks me and I would hope I am not the only one alarmed by this possibility.

So, what is it that teens are missing out on or not getting enough information about that leads to so many teen pregnancies? What would make getting pregnant seem like such a good thing to teenagers who should be looking forward to attending the various functions at school and being involved in school activities and maybe parttime employment while planning for future education? Can the communication gap that seems apparent, be bridged in a manner that teens take more self responsibility and choose to wait on pregnancy until they are married or at the least and the risk of sounding condescending, until they have completed their education and obtained gainful and productive employment? I'd rather they wait until marriage but in our world today, marriage doesn't seem to be the option it used to be.

So, what's your take on the incident in Massachusetts? How do you see it in relation to other incidents of teen pregnancy around the country?

"There are two things that matter when it comes to preventing pregnancy: not having s*x and using contraceptives consistently and carefully," says Mr. Albert. "Both are leveling off at the very best. That may be why we're seeing an increase" in the teen birthrate.

But finding a solution is contentious; there is considerable disagreement over whether educators should emphasize safe s*x or abstinence. "
