Is there something wrong with Hip Hop?

For the girls:
They say that women are negatively affected when they watch hip hop videos on TV. Do you try to be like the girls in the video? Do you concentrate more on what you see or what you hear? Do you think you are negatively affected by videos?

For the guys:
They say that men nowadays accept the way women are portrayed in videos. How do you think women are portrayed and does it really affect you personally?

Everybody: Is there something wrong with Hip Hop?

I know that's a lot to ask, but I really want to know what everyone thinks. Many people are making a big deal about this issue, and sometimes I feel two ways about it. How do you feel?? Let a girl know!

I have mixed feelings...As I've grown up I have payed more attention to what exactly the songs are saying and realized that alot of the lyrics in rap music are negative... Not just about women, but violence and drugs as well. I think that there is no doubt that what some rap songs talk about are bad and have a negative impact on a lot of people, but at the same time...Sometime you just like the beat. I think people just need to have their mind right and raise their children right so that even if they do hear a song that talks about negative things..they can think about it as just a song and not let it affect who they are. We've got a lot to work on and improve about our culture. ~BrieBrie~

Personally I am not offended by hip-hop.....I for one enjoy the old-school hip-hop, but when I see 1 year-old girls trying to do the bootie hop or children, whose minds are shaped by society and what they see on TV and on these videos, then that is where the problem comes in. Sure, many of the artist out there are not the gun-toting individuals they portray as an artist, but many children, especially the babies, are unable to seperate fantasy from reality. That is why it is up to the parents to raise their children right, but I also believe that as artist some responsibility should be taken for images that are portrayed.....especially for the artist who have never lived the lives that they are portraying just to make a dollar. I am not against hip-hop....I love beats, so I listen for that mostly, but I also have a son..and some of the songs that are out there I would never expose him to that, because words are very powerful and he is still growing and learning. He has not become the man that he is destined to be yet and whatever is positive, that is what I want to surround him with. There is not enough education going forth in our communities to teach children the difference in the fantasy vs the reality. What I like about hip-hop is your can be lyrically positive and speak about issues that are affecting our communites and still get paid, but most people are looking for a fast dollar which in my opinion only reciprocates what is already in many of our children's environments.

Hey Angi, I replied to this I thought, maybe my mind was tired and I forgot to press the Go! button.
I agree with aspects of what both Vics and Brieanna stated. But You know those females don't have to do what they do for free and most from what I saw in a documentary do it for free with the promises of fame and what they do physically for free well...
And brag/boast about it.
I thought it very bad when I saw parents pushing for their daughters to be in those videos, remember the apple bottom search (Nellie)? The 18 yr old girls family threw a party!
And there are many that will talk about it, but respectfully how many sistah's on here would turn down an offer and how many of us as men/males would cater to it...
I have to question myself on that one past vs. present vs. future. Some men/males will talk, but who is doing something about it and regardless of the fact men/males 99.9% are going to be affected by the views because God gave us You to look at but in all proper and due moderation, context, spiritual verses carnal etc.
I can say soo much more on this but let me stop here. Just know even looking is taking part and we don't always have to show forth outside but God knows the heart.
But as that former dancer who wrote books on stated, "Without the women no videos would sale. Don't let me get started on this stated preacher named Mase..........
Just being real, fair and straight up.

the images ave overwellming and far too many young girls look to that for what guys want in life and its a shame. People of color not just girls but bois too need positive images on tv. The young bois think that what they see on tv is the way they should treat women in a negatvie light and it only bets worst as time goes on
