National Reparations Convention Update
PROF. OGLETREE AND 1921 TULSA RACE RIOT SURVIVORS COMMEMORATES 85TH ANNIVERSARY AT REPARATIONS CONVENTION IN CHICAGO
CHICAGO- Professor Charles Ogletree and the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot Survivors will join Alderman Dorothy Tillman and the Seniors of the Third Ward on Saturday, March 25, 2006 at the National Reparation Convention at the historic Parkway Ballroom, located 4455 S. King Drive.
The lawsuit filed in February 2003, involved over 150 actual survivors from the 1921 Tulsa Race Riots. All were present during the Riots, and most were young children. Since the lawsuit was filed, nearly 40 of the survivors have died, two in the last week. To commemorate the 85th Anniversary of the 1921 Tulsa Race Riots, several of the survivors, including the oldest living survivor, Mr. Otis Clark, will attend the Chicago Reparations Convention and talk about their experiences from 1921. Additionally, a portion of a documentary being produced about the Riot and the survivors will have its debut at the Chicago Reparations Convention.
The group will join a gathering of hundreds of scholars and activists from across the country to discuss The Psychological and Economic Impact of Slavery on the Descendants of Enslaved Africans in America. Presenters include Chicago Alderman Dorothy Tillman, Dr. Wade Nobles, Dr. Claud Anderson, Rep. John Conyers (MI), Prof. James Smalls, and others including Ariel’s John Rogers, a direct descendant of the Tulsa Riots Survivors. The convention begins on Friday March 24th at 9:00 am. Registration is $10 for adults, $5 for student with ID and seniors.
