Is It Just Me??

ashley r · Friday, February 24th 2006 at 6:39PM · 293 views
Why is it that when you speak to some people and you tell them that you plan to attend a HBCU or that you attend one now they make comments like there are too many blacks there or why dont you go to a college where you are considered a minority?? And the bad part is that these are african americans that make these comments. Please let me know if it's just me that has encountered this problem. I feel like if we don't believe in or respect each other how can we expect other races to? I just think it's time for us to start to encourage and not discourage each other.

People tell me I'm gonna wish I stayed closer to home or Why do you wanna go there? Like Tuskegee is an okay skool but why would I want to attend there...Or why should I attend an HBCU anyway in general. But screw them! Thats there opinion not mine...I picked an HBCU for myself not for what others would think of me... If they can't see that for themselves forget them!

The race thing didn't even really play that big of a factor in me choosing to go to an HBCU. When people hear I'm going to Howard the first thing they assume is I wanted to be around mad black people when if that was the case, Idda stayed my ass in New York. It was the acedemics, the location, and yes, the race thing (not to mention all them fine men on campus :-P) that helped me to chose Howard as the school I wanted to go to .

Come to Louisiana. You either go to Southern or Gram. African-Amarican also go to LSU. I'm not puttin down any College (Untill November) but I support mine. The College you choose is who you are. I live closer to Gram but I choose Southern and I do feel the same way you feel even with some Southern Luv here also.
Be you, not someone else.

dont let that **** get too you. because if you really look at it through the real world way. the EMPLOYEER dont look at what school you went to, they want to see if you can finish what you start. but i do feel what your saying.

the reason why choose an hbcu is because the media puts out that when black people are together that they cant get along. and i would like too see if thats false. because i have a buddy that went to grambling and before he went he was geting the same comments and also about what said. but he said when he went down their from los angeles it was a whole different story. thats why he got me thinking about going.

I think that people who say things like that say it partially out of ignorance. I have had some one tell me that I too should go to a "traditional college" where im the minority. For some reason people feel that white schools are better than hbcu's when they really aren't. I had to quickly set them straight. First off a person is going to go to school where ever he or she wants to. Secondly, race has nothing to do with the issue, people go where they feel comfortable: how many white people do u c attend hbcu's? - not that many. People are gonna go to school where they want. People should not discourage you just because the school u want to attend is a hbcu. Thirdly why go to somewhere like UGA or Harvard and pay an arm and a leg when you can go to an hbcu and get a bargain, and be exposed to your culture. But some people don't see this.
