Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) will serve as the host institution for the 18th Annual National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME,
http://www.nameorg.org) International Conference. The conference will take place at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel from November 12th to 16th under the theme “Beyond Celebrating Diversity: ReACTivating the Equity and Social Justice Roots of Multicultural Education”.
NAME was founded by SUNO's Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, Dr. Rose Duhon-Sells (pictured), in order to unite individuals and groups with an interest in multicultural education from all levels of education, academic disciplines and educational institutions.
Highlights of the conference include:
Wednesday, November 12th
“Hip Hop Culture and Academics” half-day institute – The session will focus on “critical Hip Hop pedagogy” and “the Hip Hop and social justice education model and its practical application.”
“Exploring Social Identity in Schools” half-day institute – The institute will focus on defining social class. It will look into “definitions and interpretations of social class along with activities for discussing the topic with students, colleagues and parents.”Friday,
November 14th
Student Diversity Leadership Day – New Orleans area high school students will get the chance to participate in workshops focused on promoting diversity, justice and multicultural education.
Speakers include:
James Loewen, the author of Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your High School History Textbooks Got Wrong and previously the Smithsonian Institute, Tougaloo College and the University of Vermont.
Lewis Diuguid, vice president of community resources at The Kansas City Star and certified facilitator with the Newspaper Association of America.
Sandy Grande, professor of education at Connecticut College and whose current research examines the intersections between critical theory and American Indian intellectualism.
