As We Live Through A Recession and Squint at a DEPRESSION! (1021 hits)

It has been less than 24 hours since the announcement by the media that uhm yes...we are and have been in an economic recession...and the requests for help and assistance have already begun to fly into my inbox.

Requests not from estranged family members or long lost relatives who died in a car crash in the slopes of Kenya, but from verifiable connections and affiliations.

Before getting into a discussion on internet hoaxes and breach of security of our private matters through cyberspace, I want to provide a small nugget as food for thought.

In times gone by when the going got tough the family bonds got tougher.

During our prosperous years, many black folks obtained lucrative salaries, invested in appreciating assets and launched businesses in many cases. Some of those businesses actually operate in cyberspace.

When U look at what could potentially be a devastating blow to each and everyone's local and personal economic stability, U must THINK before U ACT.

If U or someone U know were to hit a down and out, near homeless and helpless situation what business owner or CEO would U have access to for a request for assistance? Check out what I am getting at for a moment. When U look outside at your SUV or fuel efficient automobile in your parking space, can U imagine sending an email to the CEO or dealership owner for a direct request? How long do U think it would take for U to obtain that @.com address? I am pretty sure if U don't have it by now...U will NOT have it time to avoid an eviction. It may not be enough time for U to put some food on your table either.

So where do people tend to go for help? Family, friends, acquaintances? Well now. Let's ask in a PROACTIVE MANNER...when was the LAST TIME U spent money with their business or referred business their way? Be it Amway, Mary Kay Soul Purpose or McDonald's franchise....when have U made a CONTIENTIOUS EFFORT to support a business with an OWNER that U personally know?

Folks, it is TIME to STOP being spectators and cheerleaders of the black community's economy. It is TIME to STOP questioning, "Why do we NEED black owned business anyway?" It is TIME to BEGIN
thinking and planning about the "WHAT IFs" and determining a proper path for survival of harder times. If U know who U will need to rely upon for support BEFORE the storm, U better ask yourself have U purchased a good insurance policy or at least bought an umbrella!

NOW...is a good time to look at where U are and have been spending your hard earned money and match it with the support your community will need when the lights go off and the heating bill is not yet paid. U are squinting ahead at a storm. Look at the "weather report" and dress your mind appropriately.

Sisterly love,

Joan E. Gosier, CEO of HBCU kidz, Inc.
