For the second consecutive year, Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) has again registered the greatest enrollment growth among public four-year post-secondary institutions in Louisiana. According to preliminary figures released today by the Louisiana Board of Regents, SUNO’s fall 2008 enrollment is 3,105 compared to its fall 2007 enrollment of 2,648, representing a 17.25% growth. The growth percentages for all state institutions of higher learning were presented in today’s Board of Regents’ Planning, Research and Performance Committee report in Baton Rouge.
SUNO's enrollment has exceeded 3,000 for the first time since Hurricane Katrina. The University also experienced a 4% increase in the number of first-time freshmen to 336 in fall 2008 compared with 323 in fall 2007. SUNO’s post-Katrina enrollment has grown consistently since reopening after the storm in spring 2006.
“The dedication and belief that our students have in this institution represent key reasons for our enrollment success. Our faculty and staff share equally in this accomplishment through the daily efforts they put forth in serving our students,” says Dr. Victor Ukpolo, SUNO’s chancellor. “With this kind of increase, naturally there will be challenges. However, we’re constantly evaluating and uncovering ways to better serve our students. Our increased enrollment signifies the great importance of fully returning to our Park Campus that was flooded by Hurricane Katrina. As the process of returning to all of our permanent buildings concludes and with offering housing for the first time in SUNO’s history come fall 2009, we are confident that even more students will view our institution as a viable, competitive educational option.”
