DATING WITH A BIPOLAR ILLNESS (196 hits)

Is possible, but common sense should be the driving force IMHO.

Why date someone when you are mentally not well? Why date somebody who is not mentall well?

First, I'm talking about being undiagnosed and receiving no treatment for Bipolar. It just makes no sense to pursue a relationship that will be frought with pain, sorrows, possibly deep physical and psychological scars for each person. Now, when I was first diagnosed more than 10 years ago, I was married. I had children. I also had issues that interfered with a healthy relationship with my spouse, family, friends, etc. I was doing my best to get through life, but I was not mentally well. I was definitely in denial anything was wrong. Everybody else had issues but me, after a while. The worst thing about all that is that I kept everything (all that anger) deep inside me. I became verrry withdrawn. No wonder my mind exploded finally!

So, in hindsight, I would have definitely been working on my mentall wellness and not married if I were educated about the brain disorder and knew its signs and symptoms back then. I would have stayed single until I was stabilized and mentally well before bringing another person into my intimate life.

Second, do the first reasons help you understand the second question? Remember, I'm talking about those who suffer with a mental illness, but receive no mental healthcare or treatment.

Now, once you are stable with treatment best for you, should you tell your date you have a mental illness? When is the best time to tell that person of the illness?

Well, in short, I say "No." It's nobody's business about your personal health. Now, if and when that relationship develops more seriously into a committed one (the two of you are the best judge of that), you should share that information around the same time you would feel comfortable telling that person you have high blood pressure, diabetes, seizures, etc.

Today I wish you would tell me what you think and maybe I will tell you about the break-up of my marriage next time.
