REMINISCING...."OLD SCHOOL STORIES"

PART 7

THE BOY NEXT DOOR

written by Ms. Winnie Shields, a.k.a. MIISRAEL

I admit I never felt like that before, when I looked into the green eyes of my very first love.  It was puppy love, and I thought of it as one of most highly emotional feelings ever.   The music of the time in the 1970's was all about love.   Loving yourself,  loving to be black, loving others , and falling in love.  When I met the boy next door I was buying cookies at the local store.  It was also a church, which sold items out their kitchen to raise funds.  It was owned by a pastor and his wife, who helped the neighborhood children stay out of trouble.  They had no children of their own so they adopted the kids that came in to buy from them. The membership was small and consisted mostly of teen-agers around the area.  Actually, many of the children didn't really place their membership with them, mainly; they only visited them as a support effort.  It's where I met my green-eye lover boy.

I'd never liked a boy  before then, but when he looked at me in the hallway of that church store, I knew it was a chemistry somewhere.  It could of been just hormones exploding in me and in him too!   It was late summer and he was joking and carrying on with me.  Then he touched my hand and I looked and saw his eyes,  they were green.  He was a light shade boy, what you might call a "bright skinned boy" . Somewhere, there was a line of white genes in his family.  He had sandy curly hair and was thin with a narrow face.  To me,  his eyes were so dreamy and full of mystic composition.

Later...when school started I recall an accident as I was exchanging classes.  As I was looking down, I mistakingly stepped on my classmate's foot. When I looked up, I panicked "Oh no!  I thought, I've stepped on the foot of the most popular girl in school! " She let out a yell.   "Ouch!  Why don't you watch were you going...She was making it a big issue!   I felt compelled to beg for forgiveness, still she blurred out  loudly in the hallway so everybody would take notice. "You need to watch where you going old big fat black girl!"  She was a bit cruel.  Yet, I kept begging forgiveness.  Looking back at her apologizing ..  I then bumped face front into my young lover.   I looked in his eyes and  melted away!.....I didn't hear anything, see anything...it was like time stood still, and her voice disappeared into a vapor.... His eyes captivated me.  I don't believe he never felt or knew the extension of my love for him.  We talked about that moment later on when I saw him years later after he and his family moved away.

Then one day at a honor student presentation,  I sat in the audience and to my surprise there he was on stage performing a song!  It was one I favored.   It was called ..."Groovin."  ....Groovin....on a Sunday afternoon"...he sang.  I thought of him singing it to me.   When I saw him a few days later.  I asked him the question.   "Do you like me?"  I pleaded ... He said,  Yes I do,  I like you a lot!   Although, it never went any further than a clean and innocent crush,  I still remember the boy next door.  I don't know where he is today.  I haven't seen him in many decades.  Which tells you I am from old school... What's so big about that?  Well......nothing   I'm just reminiscing..."Old School Stories"  about The Boy Next Door...  "Haven't you ever experienced a crush?"   Well then,.... read some WINNIESPOETRY..
