AAMU Welcomes Black Arts Festival!
Huntsville, Ala. ---- The historic campus ofAlabama A&M University is proud to be the site of the 2007 WEUP Black Arts Festival.
Considered the largest free festival in North Alabama, the two-day event will be held June 23-24. With everything from the performing to the visual arts, the Festival provides a glimpse of the wealth of talent among local, regional and national entertainers, as well as artists within the black community.
During the announcement luncheon in March, President Robert R.Jennings thanked WEUP owner and local businessman Hundley Batts “for the support he continues to give to the University” and further praised Batts for considering AAMU, the oldest institution of higher learning in the city, as the huge event’s new home.
Jennings said he envisions a win-win scenario in the coupling of the relocation of the Festival with the numerous offerings of “The Hill”—chief among them the campus’ stellar Art Department and talented drama students.
Jennings also noted a role for the newly formed juried art contest at AAMU and the likelihood of such a contest at the high school level.
“The Black Arts Festival will enhance our ability to expose our family and community to the arts,”commented Jennings. “We will do our part to make sure that people will walk away with a good feeling about the quality of the event.”
Batts said the idea to hold the free Festival came about some 18 years ago and that he is delighted AAMU, with its easy access and ample parking, will play a role in its continued growth. The proceeds from the Festival benefit the Harris Home for Children.
