I was driving to Montgomery, AL this morning with the radio morning show. The topic of discussion was Alabama State University, if you don't already know; the university just fired two directors. One of these gurus, Jim Parker, had been with the university for 30 years and is in the final stages of an investigation of his fraud, embezzlement and state employee misuse charges. Let me just say, being a thief is one thing, but to steal out of your mom's purse is a whole different animal. How in the heck do you own up to the accountability of sending class after class through one of the universities that has served as a haven to nourish, grow and encourage so many of your own children, while exploiting them at the same time.
It should be an honor and a privilege to serve at any HBCU, considering the sacrifices that the road to establishment has been paved with. HBCUs educators and leaders should be among the most dedicate, passionate and committed to building on the establishment, not instrumental in helping to tear it down. HBCUs have a rich history planted in our ability to do what’s right, our mindset to put God first and our dedication to the fight. Not talking about it, not gossiping about who did what, but dedicating time, talent and resources to get us to the place we all want to be… the right way!
Where are we going? I'm listening.
