My 1st Open Mic Experience (133 hits)

I just wanted to share this tidbit with those of you who enjoy poetry as I do:

Thursday night we had an open mic session in the "Desert Eagle Lounge." My boy, one of the civilian contractors convinced me to step up and share some verses with the crowd. I was more than eager to read, but I was anxious as well, being I have never read poetry in front of an audience. Plus, this audience sees me everyday: we are here in the Middle East deployed! (there goes my professional image LOL) Now I am an instructor by trade, I have sung in front of people too, therefore, I am no stranger when it comes to crowds; but, this was a definite 1st.

My first piece was "The Beginning." The way I wrote it was in a quick- paced staccato prose. The audience felt it and I was elated.

Then a lieutenant I know got up and gave her spiel. That piece was off the chain. I was glad I had convinced her to show and prove because not only was her stuff tight, but I didn't have to be the only one presenting.

I then did my next piece, "After the Prelude." It was really funny because if any of you ever read that poem, it's pretty explicit. I had to---do some extensive editing. LOL In a military environment (even if it is all brothas and sistahs) you have to be cognizant of your verbiage. (so I only swore once LOL) When you are going on 75 plus days no contact with... Put it this way: everyone enjoyed the poem. LOL

I can't wait to get back to the states to have this experience again. Who knows, we may get together again here in the A.O.R.
