Pope To Young People: Have Courage To Bear Witness To Hope!

Pope Francis greets delegations of young people from Portugal and South Korea in Rome for Sunday's 39th World Youth Day on the Solemnity of Christ the King as the WYD symbols, the Cross and the icon of Mary Salus Populi Romani, are passed from the Portuguese to the Koreans who will host the next world youth gathering in Seoul in 2027. By Vatican News

At the conclusion of the Mass in Saint Peter's Basilica for the Solemnity of Christ the King, Pope Francis greeted young people present from around the world, in particular the delegation from Portugal which hosted the most recent World Youth Day gathering in 2023, and the South Korean delegation which will host the next gathering in Seoul 2027.

The Pope recalled the World Youth Day symbols - the Cross and the icon of Mary Salus Populi Romani - that the Portuguese youth are now handing over to the Korean youth and how they were entrusted to them by Saint John Paul II so that they could take them around the world. The Pope encouraged the Korean youth, reminding them that by carrying the Cross in Asia they proclaim the love of Christ for all.

“Have courage! Have the courage to bear witness to the hope that we need more than ever today. There, where these symbols will pass, may the certainty of God's invincible love and fraternity between peoples grow. And for all the young victims of conflicts and wars, may the Cross of the Lord and the icon of Mary Most Holy be of support and consolation.”

During the midday Angelus that followed the Mass, the Pope had on either side of him two Korean youth who will take the Cross to Korea in preparation for the 2027 World Youth Day there. The Pope asked everyone in the Square to give them and their delegation a round of applause as well as to the Portuguese young people and delegation who handed over the Cross that featured in the 2023 WYD in Lisbon.

The Pope also noted that on this Sunday of the Solemnity of Christ the King the 39th World Youth Day is being celebrated in the particular Churches, with this year's theme: “Those who hope in the Lord will run and not be weary” (cf. Is 40:31).

He also shared news he had given recently that on 27 April 2025, during the Jubilee of Teenagers, he will proclaim Blessed Carlo Acutis a Saint. He also added that as the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints has informed him that the process for the cause of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati is coming to a positive conclusion, he also plans to canonise him on 3 August 2025 during the Jubilee of Youth, following his consultation with the Cardinals. He asked everyone to give a round of applause for the new saints.

The 39th World Youth Day will be celebrated on Sunday, 24 November 2024, the Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe. This year, the Holy Father has chosen as its theme the passage from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah: “Those who hope in the Lord will run and not be weary” (cf. Is 40:31). World Youth Day will be observed worldwide at the level of particular churches and follows the 38th World Youth Day and the international edition held in Lisbon, Portugal, in August 2023.

As usual, the Holy Father Francis will preside over the Eucharistic celebration in St. Peter's Basilica at 9:30am. Following the Mass, the traditional passing of the World Youth Day symbols will take place, initiating their pilgrimage towards Seoul 2027.

The symbols of World Youth Day – the Youth Cross and the Icon of Mary Salus populi romani – will be handed over before the concluding rites by a delegation of young people of Portugal to a delegation of young people of Korea, accompanied by their pastors. The young people of Korea will thus be able to start the pilgrimage of the symbols in Korea and in various countries across Asia, taking them everywhere – to the cities, the countryside, among the suffering, the prisoners, the poor, especially to young people with no hope – to bring closeness and consolation to all. This pilgrimage is particularly significant since it will take place in predominantly non-Christian countries.

The hope is for many young people to become “tireless missionaries of joy” (cf. Pope Francis, Message for the 39th World Youth Day) and that even those who have never participated in a WYD, over the next three years embark on a journey – especially an inner journey – to come to bear courageous witness to Christ.

On 24 November, the following will be present in the Basilica: a delegation of about 100 young people of Portugal, accompanied by the Patriarch of Lisbon, H.E. Msgr. Rui Manuel Sousa Valério, and the General Coordinator of World Youth Day Lisbon 2023, H.E. Card. Américo Manuel Alves Aguiar; a delegation of about 100 people of Korea, led by the Archbishop of Seoul, H.E. Msgr. Peter Chung Soon-taek, and the General Coordinator of World Youth Day Seoul 2027, H.E. Msgr. Paul Kyung Sang Lee; as well as young people from Rome, who will conclude the diocesan-level World Youth Day celebration with their Bishop, Pope Francis.

Reflecting the universality of the occasion, representatives from other parts of the world will proclaim the readings and lead the universal prayer of the faithful. Young Korean, Portuguese, Italian, English, French, Spanish, and Chinese native speakers will take turns during the liturgical celebration. Then, during the presentation of the gifts, young people from the five continents will be present. Through the lives and stories of these young people, the richness and diversity of their vocations are also represented, as there are young married, single, and religious people.

The History Of WYD Symbols

The Youth Cross was entrusted to the youth by St. John Paul II at the first Youth Gathering in 1984.

At the end of the Holy Year of the Redemption, after John Paul II had closed the Holy Door, he entrusted the Cross to the youth of the world. His words on that occasion were: “Carry it throughout the world as a symbol of Christ’s love for humanity, and announce to everyone that only in the death and resurrection of Christ can we find salvation and redemption.”

Pope On Christ The King: Never Shrink From Love And Truth

Pope Francis presides at Mass on the Solemnity of Christ the King, and urges young people to embrace their love for God and life despite the accusations they face from others. By Devin Watkins

As the Church celebrates the annual World Youth Day on the Solemnity of Christ the King, Pope Francis witnessed the handover of the WYD Cross and icon of Mary Salus Populi Romani.

At the conclusion of Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica on Sunday, several Portuguese young people handed over the WYD symbols to a delegation from South Korea, as they prepare to host World Youth Day in Seoul in 2027.

In his homily, the Pope called these symbols a sign and invitation for Christians to live out the Gospel without becoming discouraged and never ceasing to hope.

As the Church’s liturgical year came to a close, he urged the faithful to feel uplifted by the certainty of Christ’s eternal kingdom.

Young people, said Pope Francis, should take courage from Jesus’ faithfulness to God in the midst of trials and public humiliation.

Like Him, they too sometimes feel “accused” for following Jesus and face pressure to conform to ways that are contrary to the Gospel.

“Do not be afraid of ‘condemnations’!” he said. “Have no worries; sooner or later, their criticism will fall through, their condemnations will prove false, and their superficial values will be revealed for what they are: illusions.”

He noted that love is the only thing that will remain, and so we must embrace the eternal gift of God’s love.

Only Love Brings Happiness

Pope Francis went on to say that Jesus never sought to gain the support or “approval” of authorities, since He rejected the “mentality of power.”

God, he noted, loves each of us as we are, so we have no need to seek worldly approval on social media or by any other means.

“Before Him, the innocence of your dreams are worth more than success and fame, and the sincerity of your intentions are worth more than worldly approval,” he said.

No amount of worldly affection can make us happy, said the Pope, since “only the free gift of love can bring us happiness.”

Bearing Witness To Truth

The Holy Father then emphasized the importance of truth, which frees us from the chains of self-sufficiency, injustice, and unhappiness.

“Christ, who is the way, the truth and the life, by stripping Himself of everything and dying on the cross for our salvation, teaches us that only in love can we live, grow and flourish in our full dignity,” said the Pope.

Pope To Italian Fishermen And Health Workers: 'Work As A Team'

Pope Francis meets in the Vatican with Italian fishermen and participants in a conference on public health systems and highlights the importance of teamwork and solidarity both in the fishing and healthcare professions. By Lisa Zengarini

Some 5,200 representatives of Italian fishermen and participants in an international conference in Rome on public health systems in Europe gathered on Saturday in the Paul VI Hall for an audience with Pope Francis.

In the first part of his speech the Pope addressed the fishermen accompanied by bishops and leaders of the Apostleship of the Sea in Italy and reflected on the “value” of their profession and the mission that this value entails.

He started by recalling how far back in time the origins of their profession extend, which is also connected to the beginnings of the Church entrusted by Jesus to a fisherman, Peter.

Perseverance In Hard Work And Teamwork

He remembered that in the Gospel texts those who work at sea embody "important attitudes”, including "perseverance in hard work" and dealing with failures. This attitude, the Pope observed, is also required of today’s fishermen, who face "new pressing problems” like rising costs, stifling bureaucracy, and unfair competition from multinational companies.

In the face of these difficulties, the Pope highlighted the sense of community that unites those who work at sea, where “the success of each person’s work depends on the contribution of everyone. "Fishing, therefore, becomes a "school of life to the extent that Jesus uses it as a symbol to describe the Apostles’ vocation” to be “fishers of men."

Taking Care Of Those Providing Care

The Pope went on to note that the ability to work as a team in the face of challenges, is also a quality of health workers. Addressing the participants in the conference on the sustainability of public health systems in Europe, which was held this week at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, he drew attention to two further aspects of their work.

He first of called for healthcare workers not to neglect themselves and “instead, look after one another.” "The fatigue of exhausting shifts, the concerns you carry in your hearts, and the pain you gather from your patients demand comfort and healing," he said.

“It is important to recognize your generosity and reciprocate it by ensuring respect, esteem, and assistance.”

Compassion For The Marginalized

The second aspect the Pope highlighted was compassion for the “least fortunate”: “No one should be marginalized to the point of being unable to receive care,”, he remarked, noting that the healthcare systems have developed a special sensitivity "towards the discarded."

Pope: Canon Lawyers Must Love Justice, Charity, Truth

Pope Francis greets canon lawyers taking part in a course organized by the Roman Rota, and highlights how charity, justice, and truth are interconnected and at the heart of the 2025 Jubilee of Hope. By Devin Watkins

“Love—caritas—is an extraordinary force that impels people to courageously and generously engage in the field of justice and peace. It is a force that originates in God, eternal Love, and absolute Truth.”

Pope Francis opened his address to participants in a formation course organized by the Tribunal of the Roman Rota with those words from Caritas in Veritate, Pope Benedict XVI’s 2009 encyclical.

The mission of the Roman Rota, the Church’s highest appellate court, as well as each of the Church’s lower tribunals, can be described as a “ministry of justice and charity in truth,” said the Pope.

Canon lawyers, he added, are called to love justice, charity, and truth, which are so closely intertwined that if one is lacking all three lose authenticity.

“Neither justice without charity nor charity without justice,” he said. “Charity without justice is not true charity.”

Justice involves seeking the good of the entire community and must be tempered by mercy, “for justice can only be understood in the light of love.”

“Never forget,” urged the Pope, “that those who come to you seeking the exercise of your ecclesial office must always encounter the face of our Mother, the Holy Church, who tenderly loves all her children.”

Love, he noted, teaches canon lawyers to cultivate their “legal sensitivity” so that they may recognize “what constitutes a true right of the person within the Church.”

Pope Francis went on to invite everyone to overcome fear of justice, since it can undermine charity due to its root in a mistaken concept of justice as a merely punitive exercise.

War crimes: Hague court issues arrest warrant for Netanyahu and Hamas leaders
The International Criminal Court issues arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over the war in Gaza. Also wanted are several Hamas officials, including leader Al-Masri. Meanwhile, casualties in the Gaza Strip have risen to more than 44,000. By Alessandro Di Bussolo

The Pre-Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court today issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza conflict. Arrest warrants were also issued for a number of Hamas officials, including leader Al-Masri, commonly known as Deif. Israel had claimed to have killed him in an airstrike, but Hamas has never formally acknowledged his death.

Israel Claims Shameful And Anti-Semitic Decision

The decision by the Court in The Hague turns Netanyahu and Gallant into internationally wanted criminal suspects. Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders condemned International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan's request for warrants as “shameful and anti-Semitic.” The Israeli premier's spokesman claimed “there is no more justified war than the one Israel is waging in Gaza after the Oct. 7 attacks” adding that ”Israel rejects the absurd and false actions and accusations of the International Criminal Court, which is a biased and discriminatory political body.”

Judges: Gaza Population Deprived Of Food And Medicine

"The Chamber considered that there are reasonable grounds to believe that both individuals intentionally and knowingly deprived the civilian population in Gaza of objects indispensable to their survival, including food, water, and medicine and medical supplies, as well as fuel and electricity," the three-judge panel wrote in its unanimous decision to issue the warrants. It went on to add that Israel's acceptance of the court's jurisdiction is not necessary to enforce the warrants.

More Than 44,000 Casualties

Since the beginning of the conflict, now in its 403rd day, according to the Gaza Health Ministry there have been 44,056 casualties in the Gaza Strip and over 104,268 injured. Meanwhile, at least 22 people were killed today in Israeli air raids that struck several areas in the Baalbek region of eastern Lebanon. This was reported by the Beirut Health Ministry, pointing out that the highest number of casualties, at least eight, was in the locality of Nabha.

In the evening, the current Israeli Defense Minister, Israel Katz, and the Chief of Staff of the Israeli Forces (IDF), Herzi Halevi, met in Tel Aviv with the U.S. envoy, Amos Hochstein, who in the region to discuss a possible cease-fire agreement between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah.

Cardinal Parolin: Stop Escalation In Ukraine Before It's Too Late

On the sidelines of a book presentation at a Rome University, Cardinal Pietro Parolin addressed pressing international concerns, calling for immediate action to prevent further escalation of war in Ukraine and emphasizing the urgency of ending the conflict. By Salvatore Cernuzio

The Vatican Secretary of State did not comment on the decision of the International Criminal Court to issue an arrest warrant for the Israeli Premiere, Benjamin Netanyahu on charges of war crimes in Gaza, but he did convey the Holy See's deep concern over recent developments in the Ukrainian war, including the deployment of long-range missiles and the rising threat of a broader global conflict.

Speaking during a book launch in Rome on Friday, Cardinal Parolin answered a question regarding Pope Francis' remarks on whether Israeli warfare in Gaza, where the death toll has exceeded 44,000, could be classified as “genocide.”

“The Pope has expressed the position of the Holy See, which is that these matters must be thoroughly studied because there are technical criteria for defining the concept of genocide,” he said.

Concern For Ukraine

The Holy See, Parolin continued, has “taken note” of Netanyahu's arrest warrant and reiterated that its prime concern is that the war be ended.

Discussing The Future Of Journalism: From Conflict To AI

Vatican Radio takes part in a journalism summit organised by the European Broadcasting Union. By Vatican News

Where is journalism headed in an increasingly polarised world? What role does public service media play in a fragmented information landscape? Is artificial intelligence more of an opportunity or a risk for media professionals?

These are just some of the many questions tackled recently by hundred journalists from across Europe.

They gathered in Vilnius, Lithuania, for the European Broadcasting Union's (EBU) News Assembly from November 20th to 22nd. Vatican Radio was also in attendance, represented by Alessandro Gisotti, Deputy Editorial Director of the Vatican's Dicastery for Communication.

From Young People To The War In Ukraine

Discussions during the two-day event covered a wide array of topics. Journalists spoke of editorial independence; the engagement of younger audiences - who are increasingly less drawn to traditional media; and the use of new digital technologies, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence (AI).

The conference opened with remarks from Eric Scherer, Chair of the EBU News Committee, and Monika Garbačiauskaitė-Budrienė, Director General of Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT. Both emphasised the importance of free and independent journalism. This message is a particularly poignant one as the war in Ukraine rages on. Tensions surrounding the war are particularly strongly felt in the country, due to its geographical vicinity to conflict zone.

In fact, the conflict triggered by Russia, which has now tragically lasted more than a thousand days, was the focus of a panel discussion during which correspondents and experts underscored the role of public service media in providing reliable information in an environment heavily influenced by fake news and propaganda.

The Use Of AI

A significant part of the assembly was also dedicated to the use of artificial intelligence in journalism. In a workshop with digital experts and private-sector professionals, tools were presented for identifying AI-generated content, along with strategies for properly integrating these tools into newsrooms.

The debate that followed highlighted issues such as how algorithms select content - especially political content - as well as copyright issues related to publications used by apps like ChatGPT, and the challenges facing public media due to competition from these new platforms.

Gisotti raised concerns about the risk of widening the “digital divide” between wealthier countries (and mass media), which can bear the high costs required by these new technologies, and those lacking the resources and expertise to benefit from artificial intelligence.

An Award For Commitment

The conference concluded with the awarding of the Gunnar Høidahl Journalism Award, this year won by Dutch public broadcaster NOS. The prize was awarded, the jury said, for NOS’s strong commitment, variety of content, and the high quality of its television reporting.

Indigenous Leadership To Strengthen Church’s Mission In Ethiopia

Over the past month, Pope Francis has taken a significant step for the Catholic Church in Ethiopia by appointing five new Ethiopian-born bishops. By Bezawit Bogale

Despite being a minority in Ethiopia, the Catholic Church plays a pivotal role in promoting interreligious dialogue, peacebuilding, and humanitarian aid.

The Church has long been a platform for ecumenical collaboration, creating shared spaces for Christians of different denominations to work together on common goals.

The ecumenical background of two appointees, Bishop-elect Tesfaye Tadesse Gebresilasie, M.C.C.J.—who pursued academic studies in interreligious contexts—and Bishop-elect Gobezayehu Getachew Yilma—who has served in a predominantly Muslim region—further positions the Church to enhance its interfaith and ecumenical initiatives.

The Pope named Bishop-elect Tesfaye as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archeparchy of Addis Ababa and assigned him to the titular See of Cleopatris. A seasoned leader, Bishop-elect Tesfaye previously served as the Superior General of the Comboni Missionaries, where he oversaw the congregation’s global mission efforts.

In a parallel appointment, Bishop-elect Gobezayehu has been designated as the new Vicar Apostolic of Hawasa. He brings substantial experience to the role, having served as Secretary General and Vicar Delegate for the Apostolic Vicariate of Meki.

Indigenous Leadership For Enhanced Influence

Among the five recently-appointed bishops, two of them—serving the Vicariates of Hawassa and Nekemte—are the first-ever indigenous Ethiopian bishops for these dioceses.

Rescue Sudan From Disintegration, Bishops Of Sudan And South Sudan Make Heartfelt Appeal

With the situation in Sudan already being described internationally as one of the “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis,” the Catholic Bishops of Sudan and South Sudan have earnestly appealed to the global community to do all possible to prevent the country from disintegrating. Paul Samasumo – Vatican City

The tragic humanitarian crisis in Sudan calls on the global community to take urgent action by ending the fighting, desist from sending arms to combatants, and instead scale-up much-needed humanitarian assistance, the Catholic Bishops say.

Consequences On Civilians Beyond Tolerable

“We are deeply worried about the deteriorating socio-political situation in the Sudan, which is the result of the war that started in mid-April 2023, and continues with no chance for peace due to a lack of dialogue between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Thousands of Sudanese have lost their lives, and millions have since fled their homes to seek refuge in relatively peaceful states or in neighbouring countries. The humanitarian consequences on the civilians has gone beyond toleration and must be condemned in the strongest terms possible,” affirm the Bishops.

The prelates urge the belligerents and the people of Sudan, in general, to reject violence and work for peace.

Cardinal-Elect Kikuchi: Migrants And Dialogue Are Japan’s Path To Stability

Cardinal-elect Tarcisius Isao Kikuchi, Archbishop of Tokyo, has emphasized the importance of dialogue for global and local stability. By LiCAS News

In an interview with Vatican’s Fides News Agency, the 66-year-old Archbishop of Tokyo, who also serves as President of Caritas Internationalis, shared insights into the challenges and opportunities facing Japan and the Catholic Church.

“Dialogue is the key to stability. There is no question about it. We have to talk to each other. Dialogue is not only talking; it is also building relationships. And synodality is needed in this area too,” said Cardinal-elect Tarcisius Isao Kikuchi.

Cardinal-elect Kikuchi, a member of the Society of the Divine Word Missionaries, drew on his experiences, including his time as a missionary in Ghana, to address pressing issues in Japan, such as its aging population, youth struggles, and the role of migrants in sustaining society.

Aging Society And The Role Of Migrants

“Without migrants, an aging society like Japan will not be able to survive. The government knows the situation but is hesitant to fully accept migrants for fear of entering a new ‘world’ that Japan has never experienced before,” he remarked.

Highlighting the bureaucratic challenges migrants face, he added, “Migrants are not a problem but a hope for the Church. They offer the Catholic community an opportunity to grow with young people and to proclaim the Gospel even in areas where there is no Church.”

Japan’s hesitation to embrace migrants, coupled with economic challenges, has left younger generations vulnerable, he noted.

“Young people in Japan today need communities to which they feel they belong. The Church could be one of these communities, to support them and make them feel that they belong to a much larger reality that can accompany them in their lives,” said the Cardinal-elect.

Pope: 'Key To Education Is Good School-Family Collaboration'

Addressing Italy’s leading Catholic publishing group in the education sector, Pope Francis reiterates the need for an “educational pact" capable of uniting families, schools, and society to address the new challenges of our time. By Lisa Zengarini

Pope Francis met on Thursday with a delegation from the Catholic publishing group "La Scuola," one of Italy’s leaders in the education sector.

The company was founded in 1904 in Brescia, in northern Italy, by a group of laypeople and clergy who wanted to promote Catholic-inspired education in Italian schools. It has since expanded by acquiring other Italian Catholic publishing houses, SEI and Capitello.

In his address, Pope Francis praised the company’s pedagogical expertise and ongoing service to education.

He said their accomplishments over the past 120 years have fulfilled the wishes expressed by Pope Saint Paul VI in 1965 when receiving a delegation from La Scuola Editrice, to whose foundation his father had contributed.

The Pope commended their resilience in facing competition and adapting to the changing Italian cultural landscape marked by growing indifference to religious values.

“You have not been afraid to face risks in challenging times, marked by the competition of major publishing houses and ongoing cultural transformations.”

He noted that their “passion” for education and the formation of educators “reflects the awareness that forming young people in the values of the Gospel provides an essential contribution to a society of responsible individuals capable of building bonds of fraternity with everyone.”

Catholics Urge US President Biden To Commute Federal Death Row

As President Joe Biden nears the end of his term, Catholic Mobilizing Network calls on the US President, a Catholic, to commute the sentences of the 40 men currently facing execution on federal death row. By Devin Watkins

“We're asking President Biden to commute the federal death row, where 40 men are currently serving a death sentence.”

That’s the appeal launched by Catholic Mobilizing Network (CMN), the national Catholic organization seeking the abolition of the death penalty in the United States.

With nine weeks left in office, President Joe Biden has a unique opportunity to embrace Catholic teaching and save the lives of those 40 men on federal death row, according to Krisanne Vaillancourt Murphy, CMN Executive Director.

“We're in a time-sensitive and urgent moment because the president has constitutional authority and power to take action to commute the federal death row,” she told Vatican News.

Catholic Teaching On Death Penalty

In 2018, Pope Francis changed the Catechism of the Catholic Church, a compendium of Catholic teaching, to assert the Church’s opposition to the death penalty on the basis of human dignity, which he said is not lost even when a person commits a serious crime.
