Name : Michael Pierce
HBCU : Morgan State University
Graduation Year : 2021
Major : Biology
Minor : Chemistry
Email : mipie1@morgan.edu

1. Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*

I am from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and my mother introduced me to HBCUs.

We went to the HBCU Fair in Camden, NJ my junior year of high school and I was astounded by all of the black excellence in the convention center.

2. Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*

Coming from a predominately white high school, HBCUs were not represented at all. So when I came to visit Morgan State University I felt at home.

I would look around and see people of my skin tone and greater, and I did not feel like the “token black friend” anymore.

3. What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*

I was involved in my university right out of the gate. I was making friends with whoever at my university. My mentor, Jatia Mills, taught me to come out of my shell even more and offered me my very first Executive Board position as a freshman.

From that point on, the only trajectory was up. I earned another board position, became a Student Ambassador for the university, the Mister for the School of Computers, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences, inducted into Sigma Alpha Pi the National Society of Leadership and Success, and a plethora of other things.

Only being a junior, I strive to become a staple in the community of my university.

4. "First time" experiences at your HBCU?*

A first time experience for me was reaping the actions of my own. I began to take full responsibility and repercussions for the poor decisions that I would make.

Those experiences have taught me life lessons and changed me for the better.

5. Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*

My English professor Dr. L.B. Johnson was the first professor to say, “Suck it up and get it done. You’re not bad at writing, but you’re not good at giving yourself credit.”

From that day on he’s helped me improve my writing in ways that others could not or would not even though he probably does not know it.

6. What are the chants heard most often at the sporting events?

“WE ARE THE BEARS! WHAT!
WE DON’T TAKE NO MESS! WHAT!
WE GET MAD IN A MINUTE! WHAT!
AND STOMP YOU IN YO CHEST! WHAT DID YOU SAY!”

7. How are you positively active on campus? (e.g. clubs, SGA, etc.)

Pre-Health Organization President
Student Ambassador
Mister School of Computers, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences

8. What and where are the historical places on campus?

The bell tower on Holmes Hall in the academic quad.
