The Blogger: 04/04/06 Edition (1481 hits)

Welcome to another edition of The Blogger. I know it's been a while, but I've been very busy as late, making big moves and trying to earn an internship. Nonetheless, let's get to it.

It seems like George Bush has gone crazy again. Now...he wants to get rid of all the illegal immigrants. Come on now...have a heart. Some of these immigrants' only option is the US and you want them gone. That's just heartless. I understand you care about the economy, but they also help jumpstart the economy as well.

Mexicans (the main illegal immigrants) are also a cool race of people. They promote loyalty more than anything, and they will definitely help the US reach the one billion mark easily. That's not a diss or insult to them, but they are known to have big families, which just shows why they promote loyalty.

Bush seriously needs to rethink this whole thing. Yes, illegal immigrants should be punished...but so harshly? They should at least have some way to work to gain their citizenship. Who's going to provide the taxes for these police officers to work to "hunt" illegal immigrants? I know I don't want to provide it. If you can raise the Senate budget to a trillion plus dollars, then you can definitely pay for it yourself.

Congratulations to Florida for winning the NCAA Tournament. Let me be the first to tell you that I was nowhere NEAR winning my bracket. For starters, my final four were LSU, Villanova, Gonzaga, and Illinois. I got one of those right, and they were embarassingly eliminated. The other rounds in the tourney...ha. I wasn't even close. So many upsets hurt my bracket...and so many non-upsets hurt as well. What's so funny about the whole thing is that my supervisor at The Gramblinite picked Flordia to win the whole thing. She picked them over her beloved LSU Tigers, and she was right! I don't know how she did it, but I think she can see into the future...

The NFL Draft is gearing up, and man...I'm ready for it. Houston needs to leave Vince Young alone so he can come to the Saints, assuming the Saints keep their #2 draft pick. I'm high on Vince Young, as he reminds to a Steve McNair before the injuries. Maybe the next Warren Moon? Nope...I'm predicting that will be Grambling's Bruce Eugene. I know you haven't heard much about him, but man...this guy can play. Who do you know can throw the ball from about the 10-yard line to the other 10-yard line in college? Not too many can. Also, Eugene has the quickest velocity of all the QBs in the draft at 50 mph (or it could be higher).

What puzzles me though is how he has not had any publicity on ESPN. He scored the highest on that test they had to take, but he received no notice. He also broke the NCAA All-Time Touchdown Record. Yet, he hasn't received the acolades of a record breaker. He led the Tigers to a 45-6 rout on Alabama A&M, but no mention of him anywhere. According to prospects' lists, he is the fourth best QB in the draft, so where's his interview/highlight reel on ESPN?

It seems to me that when it come to HBCUs, we are the less superior. It doesn't make sense though. Sure, we may not have the same batch of talented athletes, but give us our props when we do have an athlete that can outplay others at the big schools. All this does is discourage Black athletes to play at HBCUs, and they know it. This is why the state of Louisiana is trying SOOO hard to shut down Southern University and Grambling. They know that the white players are finally saying, "Hey...we can get a cheap education at an HBCU and still play the game while getting drafted." If you haven't noticed...nearly every HBCU is on the verge of losing its accredidation, under bad administration, or financially underfunded or poor. Coincidence? I doubt it.

In other news, Wrestlemania 22 happened on Sunday. From what I've read and the highlights I've seen, I missed an awesome show. I will be buying that on DVD just to check it out. Shawn Michaels and Vincent Kennedy McMahon went at it. This feud is getting a little too wierd for me now. On last night's Raw, Vince McMahon did something...unthinkable. He claimed that he was in a handicap match with Shawn Michaels and God. Therefore, he will book a tag team match at Backlash (the next PPV). The match will feature Vince McMahon and Shane McMahon against Shawn Michaels and God.

How low must you go to sell your product? I'm surprised that Shawn Michaels, a born-again Christian, would participate in such an angle. If the ending has a good outcome that will help teach people a lesson, then I can sort of understand it. But what are you teaching your kids when you have a CEO going against "God?" Are you saying that kids should feel that they can take on God Himself? I doubt it, but that felt like the message portrayed to me. Maybe it wasn't, but man...it's a little too late to change that.

QUICKIES:
- An interesting event will occur tomorrow. Two minutes and three seconds after one o'clock, it will be 01:02:03 04/05/06. The order 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. I don't know if I'll remember it, but that is something interesting.

- I went to Memphis this past weekend to the Society of Professional Journalists Conference. I picked a first and third place in Sports Photography and a second place in General News Photography. I must say, I'm very proud to have received these awards. This is also my FIRST first place award. So I'm definitely happy about that.

- Some other good news, I got accepted into the New York Times Journalism Institute. It will take place for two weeks in New Orleans next month. It's good news and bad news at the same time. Good news is I'll be amongst the best, and learn from them as well. Bad news is New Orleans is still messed up and I'll have to miss a lot of my friends graduate. I'm very pained by both of those things. However, I know this is for the better, so I won't complain.

- Am I the only one wondering where Fabolous is?

- Someone recently broke into my car and stole a whole case of noni juice ($180 investment gone) and my Photojournalism book ($100+ book). That was the last thing I needed...as I need my book to pass my class. I was also planning t sell my noni juice over the Spring Break (next week!), but that won't be happening...

Well...that's it for this edition. This is The Blogger signing off...
