'Save HBCU' event set for Thursday (1909 hits)

After a senate bill was proposed a few weeks ago, Albany State University students, Albany city commissioner Jon Howard and others are hosting an event tomorrow called save HBCU's.

Senate bill 273, that has since been revised, originally proposed Albany State University, Fort Valley State University and Savannah State University would combine under one name, Georgia Agricultural and Mechanical University.

Under the latest version, senate bill 278, each institution of the university system will remain separate from each other.

Thursday's event will address legislators.

Event organizers are hoping to prevent bills like this from being proposed in the future.

Mr. Albany State, Joshua Era says, "Albany State University has so much tradition and so much passion that if that is taken away then the students will lose their passion and their motivation. we need to be able to continue to have a past to cherish and a future to fulfill."

Howard says,"and 100 or so years of history is at stake here. Albany State is over 100 years old, Fort Valley is over 100 years old, Savannah State is over 100 years old. We want to keep that tradition alive."

The event is at 201 West Oglethorpe and starts at 6p.m.
