NCCU Recognized as a Bicycle Friendly University (3722 hits)

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) has been named a 2018 Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly University (BFU) by the League of American Bicyclists, a nonprofit membership organization, which promotes cycling for fun, fitness and transportation through advocacy and education.

The designation recognizes university achievements in promoting and enabling safe, accessible bicycling on campus. The award entitles NCCU access to a variety of free tools and technical assistance from the League to become even more bicycle friendly.

NCCU will join 193 BFU colleges and universities as part of the League’s larger program and mission to create a bicycle-friendly America for everyone.

“This is great recognition for North Carolina Central University as a Bicycle Friendly University by the League American Bicyclists. The award validates the university’s efforts to provide students, faculty and staff with a viable option to the single-occupant vehicle,” said Cha’ssem Anderson, the university’s transportation director.

In 2017, NCCU introduced initiatives to make the university more bike friendly, including the Cycling Eagles Bike Share Program, the university’s first bike-share program. Cycling Eagles offers a convenient, affordable and healthy way to get around with cruiser bikes at two campus stations for members to use for on-demand, local trips.

“Congratulations to North Carolina Central University for its inclusion in a select class of 45 new and renewing Bicycle Friendly Universities nationwide,” says League Executive Director Bill Nesper. “The standards for attaining any of the four levels of awards — Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum — are very high and require deliberate, determined efforts to earn them. Universities and colleges are in a unique leadership position to help encourage and enable people of all ages —especially young adults — to adopt healthy, sustainable habits that can benefit them throughout their lives.”
