1. Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*

My name is Nyra Lewis and I am from Union, New Jersey. I would say everything and everyone introduced me to HBCUs.

Continuously seeing HBCUs in movies, social media, and hearing people discuss HBCUs and how it has its benefits made me look into them a lot more.

I was curious about what was the greatness about these Historically Black Colleges and Universities and after doing my research and falling in love with the culture and families the students created within one another made me vow that I would attend one either as an undergraduate or graduate.

2. Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*

Attending a predominantly white institute my first year of college made me realize that I wasn’t receiving the same culture as I would at an HBCU. You experience a lot of people who are color blind. You know racist things and people exists but you really get to understand it when you experience it yourself at a predominantly white institute.

There was not family and or foundation at the university I previously attended. I felt empty inside, as if something was missing. And something was missing, I was not at an HBCU. I was not around a family but more so strangers. Even though there are strangers everywhere, when you attend an HBCU it’s like leaving your immediate family to join your extended family and that’s what I love about my HBCU!

3. What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*

My experience at my HBCU is when challenges are in front of you, you take them on because those challenges will prepare you for the tasks in the future.

Meaning when a professor or anyone for that matter is challenging or motivating you to do better is not something bad but is a act of greatness. It teaches you not to give up. It taught me that when one door is locked you have the key to open many others but it’s up to you to unlock them.

4. "First time" experiences at your HBCU?*

My first time experience at my HBCU was fantastic! I felt right at home being around my people! I love it and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world! You get to experience how people of color enjoy one another and not just murdering each other as the media portrays.

Even though college is not forever you get to keep those memories of how your people can come together and move mountains.

5. Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
