WHEN: Oct. 17 - Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. nightly.
WHERE: ASU's Leila Barlow Theatre, corner of N. University and S. Jackson St.

Alabama State University's Department of Theatre Arts will perform August Wilson's “Gem of the Ocean” from October 17 to 20, which will occur at 7 p.m. nightly in the University's Leila Barlow Theatre.

“Gem of the Ocean” is the first installment of Wilson’s decade-by-decade, 10-play chronicle, known at the “Pittsburgh Cycle”, that is dramatizing the African-American experience in the 20th century. Set in Pittsburgh in 1904, Aunt Ester, a 285-year-old former slave, takes wandering fugitive Citizen Barlow into her home and guides him on a mystical journey toward healing his guilt over the crime he has committed.

The play is directed by ASU professor Brian Martin, an accomplished and well-known theater educator and director.

Student tickets are $6 with valid ASU identification card and $12 for general admission. Group rates also are available.

For tickets and more information, contact the ASU Theatre at 334-229-6929, 334-229-4551 or visit www.artsatasu.com.
