Alabama State University Theatre & Dance Students Celebrate Awards & Honors (1286 hits)

ASU students receive prestigious national & regional honors for the last five out of six years -

The theatre and dance students at Alabama State University have each won top-honors again. This is the fifth time in the last six years that ASU's students have won prestigious national and regional awards and honors in dance and theatre.

THEATRE STUDENTS HONORED
The University's Theatre students won at the Region IV conference that was held at the John F. Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Washington, D.C. Student's Jazzmin Carson (ASU junior Theatre Arts major) and her partner Zaria Hall (ASU sophomore) won first-alternate for the national award, which includes cash scholarships. Earlier both had won first-place in the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship competition in February, which was held at Georgia Southwest College in Americus, Ga., said Brian Martin, associate professor of Theatre at ASU.

“These young ladies did a phenomenal job representing the region and ASU. They have ranked second in the U.S. among both undergraduate and graduate participants,” Martin said. “I wasn’t surprised though because they worked hard for it,” he added.

THE BFA DANCE STUDENTS EXCEL
ASU's Bachelor in Fine Arts (BFA) student-dancers also have brought home the national honors, said Professor Michael Medcalf, head of the BFA program at ASU. They just returned from the American College Dance Association’s annual meeting with an invitation to perform in Washington, D.C. The Alabama State University program is one of only two colleges in the U.S. to be invited to the national festival.

“We are so humbled and elated that we have again been invited to share our work on a national level. The students truly gave a stunning performance,” said Medcalf. “The importance of dance at ASU continues to unfold as our students embrace it more and more.”
