Gadsden State to host camp for eighth-graders during Spring Break (4208 hits)

Area eighth-graders can spend Spring Break preparing for high school at Empowerment 2018, a three-day youth camp on Gadsden State Community College’s Valley Street Campus, the area’s only Historically Black College and University campus. The camp will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 27-29.

“Empowerment 2018 focuses on providing enriching activities that promote personal growth and high school readiness,” said Kimberly Crook Campbell, camp coordinator. “The camp also provides students the opportunity to spend time on a college campus.”

On March 27-28, camp activities will include sessions on technical careers, the value of education, financing post-secondary education, building a scholarship-winning resume and cyber-personal etiquette.

On March 29, campers will travel to Huntsville to tour the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

Upon completion, every camper will be given a personalized Success Tool Kit.

“This tool kit is designed to assist campers with tracking accomplishments critical to their college application process and subsequent employment,” Campbell said.

The tool kit tracks academic records, awards, community service activities, hobbies, workshops, organizations, sample resumes and networking contacts.

In addition to the Success Tool Kit, campers will receive a book package of titles designed to acquaint them with money management skills as well as promote building a sound financial structure as a teenager transitioning into adulthood.

With funds received from the U.S. Department of Education, this event is coordinated and conducted by the Title III Program located on the Valley Street Campus in partnership with Educational Talent Search. The camp is free to participants; however, space is limited.

To register or for more information about Empowerment 2018, contact Campbell at 256-549-8681 or kcampbell@gadsdenstate.
