Dr. Omar Bagasra and Dr. Rebecca Bullard-Dillard Cited as Outstanding Faculty Role Models

The Claflin University Board of Trustees hosted a reception in honor of Claflin’s faculty who were named co-winners of the 2006 SC Governor’s Professors for Excellence in Scientific Awareness, Thursday, March 16th in Ministers’ Hall. Dr. Omar Bagasra, Director of the SC Biotechnology Center, and Dr. Rebecca Bullard-Dillard, Chair of the Department of Biology, were acknowledged by the Claflin University family for being outstanding role models for academicians in their field and for the roles they play in the lives of young emerging scientists at Claflin.
The Office of the Governor and the SC Academy of Science made the award to Dr. Bullard-Dillard and Dr. Bagasra for their contributions and leadership in scientific research at post-secondary institutions. Earlier, the Claflin University professors were honored for their enthusiasm for the sciences during the 79th Annual Meeting of the SC Academy of Science held Friday, March 10, 2006 on the campus of the University of South Carolina. The Office of the Governor will honor the distinguished professors during an awards ceremony scheduled during the summer.
“Claflin has no limits in terms of its vision and its excellence.” At Claflin, if it’s not about excellence, we don’t do it,” stated President Henry N. Tisdale, citing that Dr. Omar Bagasra and Dr. Rebecca Bullard-Dillard were shining examples of excellence.
Since 1996, Claflin University, the undergraduate research oriented institution, has earned the distinction among South Carolina private post-secondary institutions for having four (4) Governor’s Professors. In addition to Dr. Bullard-Dillard and Dr. Bagasra, two of Claflin’s National Millennium awardees for Excellence in Teaching were named the 2005 and 1996 SC Governor’s Professors of the Year -- Dr. Angela W. Peters, chair of the Department of Chemistry; and Dr. Shingara S. Sandhu, professor of Chemistry, respectively.
