Dr. Donzell Lee to deliver keynote speech at Alcorn State University’s Fall Commencement (1416 hits)

One of Alcorn State University’s own will address graduating scholars during the university’s fall commencement.

Dr. Donzell Lee, who serves as the executive vice president for the Office of Academic Affairs and provost, will deliver the keynote speech at Alcorn’s Fall Commencement Friday, Dec. 8 at 10 p.m. in the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex.

Lee is honored to inspire the graduates as they celebrate the culmination of their academic journey.

“I am always happy to recognize the outstanding achievement of our students,” said Lee. “Graduation is one of those great milestones in the life of a student, and I am delighted to highlight this achievement in the form of the commencement address.”

Lee began his career as an instructor of music in Alcorn’s Department of Fine Arts. He progressed through the professional ranks, distinguishing himself as a professor and scholar, and was awarded the rank of professor with tenure early in his career. In 1983, he oversaw the development of the first computer assisted instruction music laboratory in the state of Mississippi, a facility that garnered much acclaim in the state and region.

In 1984, Lee became the director for the Honors Curriculum Program, bringing regional and national recognition to the program through his and his students’ participation in regional and national honors councils and through the hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants garnered for the Honors Program.

Lee went on to become the chairman for the Department of Fine Arts in 2001, and remained in that leadership position until 2006 when he became the dean for the School of Graduate Studies. In 2008, he became the interim associate vice president for Academic Affairs. In 2011, he became the vice provost, working closely with the provost and executive vice president to strengthen academic programs, policies and procedures. Upon the former provost’s retirement in 2014, Lee served one year as interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs before being appointed to the position in 2015.

Lee holds degrees from Xavier University, Stanford University and Louisiana State University.
