Alabama State University Faculty/Entertainment Lawyer to Speak at Howard University's Music Lecture Series (1948 hits)

Alabama State University faculty member - Dr. William Ashbourne - who is a well known national entertainment attorney and the coordinator of the Recording Industry Program at ASU will deliver a lecture at Howard University on Oct. 23, as part of the university’s Department of Music Lecture Series.

Ashbourne’s lecture, titled “Music Streaming Trends: Part II,” will focus on trends within the streaming landscape itself.

“My lecture will discuss streams of income available to musicians and songwriters,” Ashbourne said. “Primarily, the newest source of income from music streaming. I also will discuss the technology, the income potential, the various online options available, as well as the inherent legal issues that arise when new technology meets outdated laws.”

Ashbourne explained streaming is the continuous flow of data or information (like music or video) to a computer or device without having the capability of keeping it on a hard drive.

“The difference between streaming and downloading is you don’t get to keep the song. But you can listen to it for free,” Ashbourne said. “Think of it like a radio station, but you get to choose which songs you want to hear. In fact, the music industry is on the upswing because of streaming.“

This is part six of an ongoing series of lectures that Ashbourne presents at Howard University regarding current legal issues in the music business.

“This is my attempt to share with tomorrow’s leaders in the music business the most effective means by which to attain success in this very competitive industry,” Ashbourne said. “I have over 30 years of experience in this industry."
