WHEN: Tuesday (April 4), at 6 p.m. - The 49th anniversary of Dr. King's assassination.
WHERE: The ASU Library (Levi Watkins Learning Center) in its Lecture Hall.
On the 49th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., an exhibit of artifacts relating to his civil rights work in Montgomery and a discussion of his life by people who personally knew him, will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Alabama State University's Library (The Levi Watkins Learning Center) in its Lecture Hall.
The event is called “Walking in the Footsteps of Martin Luther King” and it is sponsored by ASU's National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture.
The King artifacts that will be on display comes from the collection of Maude Ballou, Dr. King’s personal secretary while he was in Montgomery from 1955 - 1960. They include Ballou’s daily notebook that chronicles King’s different work-related appointments; letters to Ballou from Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks, and books signed by King. Maude’s son, Howard Ballou, will discuss the artifacts and take part in the panel discussion scheduled for Tuesday. Maude Ballou is alive, but she is too fragile to attend the event.
Joining Ballou's son includes the following scheduled speakers:
* Charles Varner - an ASU student during King’s time on campus. Varner, the keynote speaker, will discuss King and his close relationship with the ASU campus, its students and faculty/staff;
* Dr. Ralph Bryson - a member of ASU's faculty in 1955 when King helped begin the Montgomery Bus Boycott and a member of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church while King was pastor. He’ll talk about members of Dexter who were also administrators, faculty or staff at ASU and close friends with King;
* Nelson Malden - King’s barber. Malden, who still cuts hair on South Jackson Street, will discuss the time he spent with King.
