NSU’s newest class offering “Black Lives Matter” and the Honors College will present a day-long symposium titled The Miseducation of America: Racial Violence and Healing and The Politics of Protest Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Student Center, rooms 138 B-C. The event will feature the film “Wilmington on Fire” and discussion with the film’s producer and director, Christopher Everett, beginning at 6 p.m. in Room 149.
“Wilmington on Fire” chronicles the bloody attack on the African-American community by an enraged white mob in the city of Wilmington, North Carolina, Nov. 10, 1898. It is considered one of the only successful coup d’etat in the United States that left countless numbers of African-American citizens dead and exiled from the city. After a racially divisive election, a white mob — under the direction of city leaders — burned the offices of the Wilmington Record, the city’s only black-owned newspaper. Then, the mob fanned out over the city and killed between 14 and 60 people, by most estimates. In the aftermath, the mayor and board of aldermen were all forced to resign and a new, all-white city government was installed. Everett’s documentary includes interviews with scholars and the descendants of some of the victims. The Wilmington incident was the springboard for the white supremacy movement and Jim Crow segregation throughout the state of North Carolina and the American south.
Everett’s “Wilmington on Fire” was originally released in 2015. The actor, writer and producer plans two other segments of the film. His other film credits include “My Last Breath” (2007) and “Flush” (2007). A native of Laurinburg, North Carolina, “Wilmington on Fire” is his first feature-length documentary. In addition to his film work, Everett has a background and specializes in graphic design, marketing and advertising.
