Texas Southern University and Houston Community College said Wednesday they will ease the process of transferring credits from the two-year community college to Houston’s historically black university.
Major by major, the two schools will identify courses to be taken at Texas Southern and at HCC to complete a bachelor’s degree at the four-year institution. The two universities also will share information on students’ interests and curriculum changes.
TSU signed a similar agreement with Lone Star College over the summer, several months after TSU's new President Austin Lane took office after working at Lone Star. TSU accepts up to 66 credit hours from junior or community colleges, and it does not accept credits for vocational or occupational training.
Making it easier for students to enroll at TSU would help Lane toward one of his top priorities – increasing enrollment.
The number of students at TSU has declined roughly 25 percent since 2005 to about 8,900, and he hopes to lift that figure to 15,000 by 2020.
The college transfer process in general doesn’t always go smoothly. A 2014 report published in the journal of Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis found that about 14 percent of transfer students studied had fewer than 10 percent of their community college credits transferred.
