National Science Foundation Awards Alabama State University Students STEM Scholarships (2191 hits)


Over $78,000 in scholarships awarded to students majoring in science, technology, engineering & math. Fifth Year in a Row that ASU Students have Received this Prestigious National Award.

Alabama State University undergraduate students have been awarded scholarships in STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and math) for the fifth consecutive year in a row by a grant from the nationally acclaimed academic organization known as the National Science Foundation (NSF).

The scholarships were awarded to 27 ASU students with grade point averages of 3.0 or higher and who are enrolled in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Approximately $78,298 was awarded in the fall with some awards beginning during the summer 2016 semester.

“The STEM scholarship has helped me tremendously in achieving my goals throughout my undergraduate years,” said Uriel Rose, who is a senior majoring in biology. “I appreciate the honor and will continue to fervently pursue excellence in my scholastic endeavors in the future.”
The grant has provided assistance to more than 120 STEM students through scholarships totaling $388,358 within the last 5 years. In addition, the program provides tutoring services for STEM students.

Dr. Manoj Mishra, an associate professor of biology and director of the ASU Cancer Biology Research and Training program, serves as a principal investigator for the grant, while Elijah Nyairo, instructor of chemistry, serves as co-principal investigator.
