Texas Southern University introduces Summer of Success (SOS) initiative (1635 hits)

Texas Southern University (TSU) has launched a new, 5-week Summer of Success (SOS) academic support program to provide conditionally admitted students an opportunity to gain full admission into TSU’s 2016 freshmen class. So far, more than 335 students have requested to join the program. Classes for the program begin on July 11, 2016.

The aim of SOS is to serve as a nurturing, holistic, on-campus academic preparedness program for graduating high school seniors and first time in college students to improve their academic skills and prove their ability to progress through their chosen academic field. The program will focus on intellectual growth and social guidance through mentorship. Participants will be encouraged to live on campus in TSU’s new freshmen residential hall to take full advantage of the program’s scope, but commuter students are welcomed.

On starting the program, Texas Southern University President Dr. Austin A. Lane stated, “Institutional data shows that there are a host of young people who need a helping hand to get a handle on the skill-set necessary to master college. The Summer of Success program is one more step toward fostering students who, with dedicated guidance, can shake up society with their brilliance and talent.”

The SOS schedule will include two morning academic courses followed by an afternoon freshman-level seminar course. Students will also be required to attend a mandatory study hall. SOS students living on campus will participate in special evening and weekend activities inside the residence hall that will bolster their experience within the program’s curriculum.

The SOS initiative, a companion program to TSU’s First Generation initiative, is the university’s first steps in preparing students to earn a baccalaureate degree in four years. The program also supports TSU in its plan to contribute to Texas’ 60x30 initiative to have 60% of Texans age 25 to 34 with a certificate or degree by 2030.

Interested students who applied to Texas Southern for the Fall semester and were not offered full admission are eligible for the Summer of Success. Contact the Office of Admissions for more information at 713-313-7849. SOS applications are available online at www.tsu.edu/success.
