Alabama State University's NPR Station (WVAS) Wins Top Associated Press Awards (1086 hits)

"The Voice of Alabama State University,” WVAS (a National Public Radio station) continues to receive acclaim for excellence in news broadcasting.

Five journalists with the radio station each received awards from the Associated Press (AP), and four of them were first-place prizes! The Associated Press awards were given out on June 18, at the annual Associated Press Media Editors Awards Luncheon in Birmingham.
Among the first-place awards for WVAS was Best Coverage of a Scheduled Event for the station’s special broadcasts of the events surrounding the Voting Rights Selma to Montgomery 50th anniversary.

“The ‘Best Coverage’ award is especially meaningful to us because it was a labor of love,” said WVAS station manager, Candy Capel. “It was truly a team effort, and we could not be more proud of this work.”

That pride in the WVAS news team is shared by Marcus Hyles, senior news correspondent at WVAS. Hyles won the first-place award for "Best Commentator" for his feature program, “Hyles Files.”

“I’m extremely proud and happy about the recognition that the entire staff of WVAS has received from our peers in the industry,” said Hyles. “The Associated Press is the premier news service in the country, so to receive these awards is a huge honor every year. Winning for the ‘Hyles Files’ is more of a personal treat for me because that’s really more about my writing."
Hyles said being recognized by the Associated Press speaks to the excellence of the work being done at WVAS.
