Johnson C. Smith University marks 149th year with Arch of Triumph Gala (1966 hits)

Families of the Mother Emanuel Nine, Quentin Talley and Mattie Grigsby to receive awards

The Johnson C. Smith University Board of Trustees and President Ronald L. Carter will host the Eighth Annual Arch of Triumph Gala Saturday, April 9, 2016, at the Richardson Ballroom of the Charlotte Convention Center. Join us for an evening of celebration as we commemorate the 149th anniversary of the university’s founding and reveal this year’s May 15 graduation speaker.

The Gala also serves as a platform to recognize the generosity and achievements of individuals who have made their mark on the university’s community. This year’s honorees are Quentin Talley, founder and artistic director of OnQ Performing Arts; Class of 1948 Trustee Emerita Mattie Grigsby; and the courageous families of the Mother Emanuel Nine, who united the nation against hatred in the wake of last summer’s mass shooting in Charleston, S.C.

The Arch of Triumph Gala takes place every year in April and draws hundreds of the region’s most prominent corporate, philanthropic and community leaders, along with University Trustees, administrators, alumni and friends. The black-tie evening includes an exclusive VIP reception, an exquisite dining experience and an awards ceremony. Proceeds benefit The JCSU Fund, providing scholarships for our best and brightest students. Carolinas Healthcare and Wells Fargo are the Gala’s presenting sponsors.
