Johnson C. Smith University - A Top 10 HBCU For Alumni Giving (1636 hits)

Johnson C. Smith University’s leadership in alumni giving was recognized in a recent U.S. News and World Report article that ranked the top 48 historically Black colleges or universities (HBCUs) in terms of alumni support. The Charlotte, N.C.-based, 148-year-old university is ranked No. 7 with a 16.3 percent alumni giving rate during 2012-13 and 2013-14.

The report is based on the 48 Historically Black Colleges and Universities that submitted data to the magazine in an annual survey. Claflin University, Bennett College, Spelman College, Tuskegee University, Fisk University and Livingstone College topped the list, followed by JCSU at No. 7, while Tougaloo College, Morehouse College and Fort Valley State University rounded out the Top 10.

“JCSU alumni continue to support the transformative vision for the University. Their generosity indicates complete understanding of the urgency to support a high-quality education for the next generation’s agents of change,” said Joy Paige Springs, vice president of Institutional Advancement. “We are actively working with the JCSU National Alumni Association to increase the alumni giving rate in order to ensure that our students can focus on their academic success, rather than fretting about how they will meet financial obligations.”

The contributions of alumni, corporations, foundations, faculty/staff and friends of Johnson C. Smith University catapulted the University’s Tomorrow is What WE Make It comprehensive campaign to new heights in just a few years, bringing the total to $122 million toward the $150 million goal. It is the largest fundraising campaign in the history of JCSU, and one of the largest of any in HBCU history. The campaign culminates on the University’s sesquicentennial anniversary (150th year) in 2017.

Funds raised through the Tomorrow Campaign will infuse dollars into four strategic pillars: scholarships, academic resources, a vibrant campus experience and the JCSU Fund.
