For some North Carolina Central University students, this summer was about increasing their potential for Eagle Excellence. Through fellowships, internships and volunteering, students used the summer as an opportunity to increase their skill sets and knowledge outside the classroom.
Seniors Carri Murphy, Tobias Flow and Alanna Burwell were selected to participate in the National Institutes of Environmental Health (NIEHS) Scholars Connect Program.
Carri continued her work for a second summer with researchers, scientists and biologists in the NIEHS Chromosome Stability Group. Murphy was awarded the first Outstanding Scholar Award by the Scholars Connect Program last year and was invited to return for a second summer.
Tobias participated in the Toxicology and Toxicokinetics Group. Within this cohort, students were mentored by NIEHS toxicologists and postdoctoral fellows.
Alanna joined the National Toxicology Program Molecular Pathogenesis Group. Burwell worked with a biologist and the NIEHS group leader on her research efforts.
The National Scholars Connect Program is operated by the NIEHS Office of Science Education and Diversity. It is part of an institute-wide effort to increase diversity among scientists in the environmental health field. The weeklong boot camp and orientation provides classroom sessions and hands-on training in scientific method and laboratory procedures and promotes engagement in scientific research.
NCCU seniors Salima Taylor and Jasmine Young traveled to Gaborone , Botswana, to join the GlobeMed Internship for three weeks. The duo worked with the organization on efforts to reduce health disparities in Africa. Through this internship, students engage in initiatives to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world. Jasmine was extra busy, as she participated in two internships this summer. Before traveling to Africa, she participated in a 10-week summer research program at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Jasmine attended GRE preparation workshops as well as made special presentations on cancer research.
NCCU public administration graduate student William Anyu served as a site coordinator for The Valour Academy Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools. Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools work with students in K-12 at hundreds of sites around the nation in an effort to increase literacy and reading levels for all children.
