A quote I like that Tom Joyner said (161 hits)

Tom Joyner said,

'No one who is successful in this life did it on his or her own.'

This is so true.

Another thing is that I hear some people say it's who you know that helps you to be successful and not what you know. Why do people make that so important instead of what they know. It's valid to a certian extent, but I disagree. This saying is the other way around. This statement makes me feel that the knowledge I know is invalid and is done only in vain.

It is what you know that brings people to know you. Your knowledge, gifts and talents speaks for itself. People will respect you for what you know and do. ( I wish people could see it from this perspective even though this is not an idealistic world)

Think of a young girl in school who was known as "the quiet girl". She wasn't popular like the other girls in her class, but she was very smart. She entered the school's spelling bee and won. Now everyone knows that she is smart and wants to befriend her, sometimes for the right and wrong reasons.

Also think of Jesus and how even though he was the son of God people (except the desciples whom he chosen) did not acknowledge him until he started doing miracles; that when many began to follow him.

This is just something I wanted to get off my chest.

Everybody needs somebody sometimes(Frank Sinatra). Ofcourse we can't be successful without the aid of another. It started since the day we were born with our mother helping us when we couldn't help ourselves.

Tell me how you feel about this. I am open to different point of views.

Thank you for reading and God Bless.

Dont take this the wrong way I agree is should be What you know not Who you know, but that is not realilty. In the Real world it does matter who you know, where you went to school, what frat your in ect... I say this because people like to be comfortable because it is harder to say no to someone you know.

Of course when it come to someone who is far more talented that is a different story but if I have to people on even plane then Im going with the person I feel more comfortable with. The person I percieve as better.

This is why this site is so valuable to HBCU's. I feel that through networking and exposing how much talent/intellect comes out of HBCU's we can combat some of the myths out there. I have seen resumes looked over because of the school on the resumes. I have had conversations with people( Manager in the Company) who look differently at individuals from a larger NON HBCU school.

Although it may not sound fair but its is how it is. TO be honest I think it is more human nature than it is racisim.

Thank you gentlemen for the comments. A lot of people I have encountered think this way about who you know. I even hear my younger cousins too. This statement is taken out of proportion. I know it's about networking, but some people do it for all the wrong reasons.

I agree with you too Isaac. My reaction from hearing this statement makes me feel that what you know is not even important, and all you need to know is someone in a position of power to be successfull.

I feel you on that but put your focus on being an expert at what you do be cause in the end Who you know can only get you in the door, What you know will keep you there.
