Calendar to benefit institutions
CHICAGO | Chicago-based agency Danielle Ashley Communications and the Walgreens Corporation teamed up in a show of support for education and the legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. They have created a calendar with proceeds benefitting 12 academic institutions.
“The 2006 HBCU calendar is truly a labor of love on our part,” said Tracey Alston, president of Danielle Ashley Communications. “I’m so proud that through this calendar we are making it possible for everyone to celebrate black history every month and support black education every day.”
John Gremer, director of community affairs for the Walgreens Corporation, said the company understands the importance of highlighting the schools and continuing their legacies. Walgreens is the exclusive vendor for the calendar.
Featuring 12 of the country’s first African-American academic institutions, the calendar captures their culture and historical significance.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the calendars will go to each featured institution as well as to the United Negro College Fund. In addition, the pages of the calendar are filled with little known facts about African-American firsts, and the multifaceted contributions and achievements by blacks that have helped to shape America.
The calendar provides information beginning with Cheyney University, the oldest of the HBCUs, and ending with Talladega College. Each month a different school is profiled with narrative and images that highlight its proud history.
The calendar is available at participating Walgreens or on the Internet at
