Alabama State University alumnus Lonnie Washington (‘88) has been sworn in by Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley as the newest member of ASU’s Board of Trustees. Washington is filling a vacancy on the Board left by Birmingham businessman Larry Thornton, who resigned his position in November.
“I am very humbled by the appointment,” Washington said. “I also am very excited to bring my professional skills back to my university to help it grow, thrive and give current students some opportunities.”
Washington, an attorney in Bessemer, Ala., has practiced law for 22 years. In 2001, he co-founded Washington, Lloyd & Henderson, PC, and since has concentrated on public interest litigation, estate planning, mass tort, Medicaid estate planning, consumer protection law, consumer product safety and home ownership protection law. He also serves as a municipal judge in Brighton and as judge pro-tem in Birmingham, Fairfield and Midfield.
He said serving as a trustee will offer a tremendous opportunity to bring his decades of experience as an attorney into the board room.
“I hope to work well with my fellow Board members and to set University policies that will enhance and give the University leadership every opportunity to succeed and meet our goals and expectations,” Washington said.
Washington graduated from ASU with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1988 and earned a Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Samford University's Cumberland School of Law in 1991. He was admitted to the Alabama Bar in 1992. Upon graduation, he worked as assistant district attorney for Jefferson County, Ala., from 1993-1996.
Washington said ASU’s English program taught him a great deal about critical and analytical thinking and prepared him for a successful career as an attorney.
“As long as one prepares himself and takes advantage of the opportunities that this great University offers, you can succeed in any environment, whether academic or professional,” Washington said.
Washington also serves as general counsel to the Alabama State Missionary Baptist Convention (ASMBC); associate member of the Jefferson County Alabama Personnel Board; network attorney for the Alabama Education Association (AEA); trustee at the Birmingham Baptist College; and is a member of the board of advisors for Citizens Trust Bank, the oldest African-American owned bank in Alabama and Georgia.
He recently was honored with the outstanding community service award by the Birmingham Metro Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
