Alabama State University's first Turkey Day Classic event is TODAY (Nov. 14) and it's not a parade, speech or concert - matter-of-fact, it's all labor, sweat, and hard work, but it's a true labor of love.
On what is predicted to be one the coldest days of the year so far, over 150 ASU volunteers (students, staff, faculty and administrators) will be literally 'out in the cold' providing the muscle and brawn to build a playground for the disadvantaged youth who are members of the Chisholm Boys and Girls Club. ASU is providing the labor and the playground equipment has been donated courtesy of Disney and ESPN.
Beginning at 9:30 a.m. and continuing until the ribbon-cutting at 2:30 p.m., ASU's volunteers will be working hard to make sure the playground is up and operational so the children may play there as soon as school lets out for the weekend on Friday.
"This is a true labor of love as far as ASU's volunteers are concerned because we feel that our city's youth are one of our most important treasures," said Kenneth Waters, an ASU staff member who is helping coordinate ASU's volunteers.
"As an ASU Hornet, we constantly provide outreach to mentor and nurture the children of Montgomery," he said. "Plus, building this playground is going to give us all great satisfaction in knowing that we have helped to provide our city's disadvantaged youth with a safe and well-equipped place to play."
