Earlier this year, we did a feature on the 2005 Nissan "Shift Knowledge Scholarship" Recipients back in in August. There were a handful of winners and a few of them happened to be HBCUconnect.com members. In annoucement of that, we asked them how they found out about the scholarship and also tell us why they selected the HBCU they decided to attend.
2005 Nissan "Shift Knowledge Scholarship" Recipient,
Demitrius Jones "First I would like to thank you for allowing me to become a recipient of such a worthy cause. I was in desperate need of funds and through prayers, Nissan, UNCF, and the strength of God I was able to receive it.
I found out about the 2005 Nissan "Shift Knowledge Scholarship" by searching for scholarships. I had a desire to attend a HBCU this upcoming Fall (2005), so I needed some scholarships to support this desire. I had heard from teachers and administrators that there was a web site that awarded scholarships to students attending certain HBCU's. This site was the UNCF, when I was able to explore the page, I'd seen many scholarships available but I had missed most of the deadlines. The Nissan "Shift Knowledge Scholarship" was one out of a few which still had applying time. I'm glad that the scholarship was available on UNCF.org, and I'm blessed for being a recipient.
I am now attending Morehouse College, majoring in Political Science. I chose to attend Morehouse College because of the history and the mission the school has to offer. Morehouse College is an all male liberal arts school, known alumni are
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,
Spike Lee,
Samuel Jackson just to name a few.
Morehouse' mission is to develop men with disciplined minds, emphasizing the continuing search for truth as a liberating force. This is exactly what I want to be, I want to achieve the most for myself and my community. I plan on going and aiding the minority youth with scholarships and employment, so that they'll understand that life isn't all about what you see and hear on T.V. I chose Morehouse College as a school of my desire, because I know it can make my dreams become true."
