Tigers Conclue Play at ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate (392 hits)

The Tigers cut another stroke off their previous round as they concluded play at the ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate. The weather conditions at the Par-71, 6,565, RidgePointe Country Club remained under cloudy skies as the teams fought off the rain.

Arkansas State won the team title with a 10-over, 862, and outscore second place Belmont by 12 strokes. Tennessee State had moved up to 12th place midway through the final round, but fell to 17th as they shot a 73-over, 925.

James Stepp placed 20th by closing out the two-day event with a 10-over, 223. South Dakota State’s Hudson Carpenter claimed top medalist finishing with a 2-under, 211.

Stepp (79-71-73=223) carded a team low 2-over despite firing four bogeys and five pars for a 4-over after nine holes of play. Stepp just missed eagles on the par-5, 6th and the par-4, 8th as both of his 2-under shots lipped out, setting up tap in birdies. The junior shot 2-under on his final nine holes to lead the Tigers.

Andrew Warner (81-74-78=233) hit a 9-iron from 155-yards on the par-3, 7th, to leave 15 feet for birdie. Warner’s putt just grabbed enough of the left side of the cup to fall in for his lone 1-under of the round. The senior finished the round with 10 pars.

After shooting a career high 90 during the first round, Blake Burgett (90-74-74=238) regained his form with two consecutive rounds of 74. Burgett recorded five birdies and reached as low as 1-under during the round before finishing at 3-over. The sophomore hit eight fairways and 10 greens in regulation over the final 18-holes.

After pulling his tee shot on the par-4, 1st, Burgett dropped a 10-foot putt for the first of five birdies on the day. The Nashville native converted a 20-foot uphill putt for birdie on the par-4, 3rd, and just missed an eagle on the par-5, 5th, leaving a short putt for birdie.

Matt Campbell (80-87-78=245) scored a countable 7-under, 78 by recording 12 pars. Through eight holes, the junior sat at 1-over. Campbell dropped four strokes over the next three holes before closing out at 2-over through the final seven holes.

Dallas Hill (78-85-83=246) opened the first ten holes of the day at 2-over with six pars and a birdie. Hill would fall off the pace with just one par over the final eight holes and recorded a non-countable 83. His lone birdie came on No. 6, as he drove the fairway off the tee box with a 3-wood. Hill laid up with a 5-iron, setting up a gap wedge to within 10 feet. The junior managed just 6-of-15 fairways and hit nine greens in regulation.

The men will play in their final tournament before the Ohio Valley Conference championships. The Tigers will host the Big Blue Intercollegiate at Hermitage Golf Club on Apr. 14-15.
