Danielle Williams - Nissan Scholarship Recipient (3545 hits)

Earlier this year, we did a feature on the 2005 Nissan "Shift Knowledge Scholarship" Recipients back in in August. There were a handful of winners and a few of them happened to be HBCUconnect.com members. In annoucement of that, we asked them how they found out about the scholarship and also tell us why they selected the HBCU they decided to attend.

2005 Nissan "Shift Knowledge Scholarship" Recipient,
Danielle Williams

"Thank you very much! Well, I first learned about the scholarship from my College Advisor. I picked up an application from the College Office and filled it out. My advisor said that since I was attending an HCBU that this would be a great scholarship opportunity. The requirements were an essay about a SHIFT_ in my life, proof of enrollment at an HBCU, and other personal information. In my essay I discussed how I made a SHIFT_ from attending a PWI to a HBCU. I had to decide whether to attend Stanford for its name or attend Howard because that's where my heart and family is. So I discussed this SHIFT_ in my essay and a few months later I was informed that I had been awarded this scholarship given only to 10 students in my area. I was one of three chosen from King/Drew Magnet High School.

Other reasons why I chose Howard are that I wanted the HBCU experience for my undergraduate education. Since I plan to pursue medicine I have the next four years to attend another type of University. But for now Howard was my choice because it is located in one of the most powerful areas of the country. The people I meet here will change my life and the networking that is available will allow me to pursue the career of my choice. If I stayed in California I wouldn't have had the same experience of meeting people from all over the United States and from as many International countries. Howard is known as the "Mecca" and by just being on the campus I feel that I am apart of something great. The legacy of the University is another factor. So many Black professionals have graduated from this University and established their infamous mark on the world. For example Toni Morrison, Thurgood Marshall, Debbie Allen, and more are all alumnus. Also, Howard has a great reputation for it's research program which is also intriguing. So thank you for the opportunity for me to tell you my story."
