HU Receives Grant for Energy Research (3445 hits)

November 30, 2005

Hampton University was one of five colleges and universities around the country to receive energy research grants from the U.S. Department of Energy to advance methane hydrate research, produce hydrogen and improve oil recovery.

Liang Hu, a professor of chemical engineering, received $200,000 for his research on a new form of carbon dioxide technology that eventually could reduce the cost of capturing carbon dioxide by 80 percent. Hu, a faculty member since 1995, received the grant because the Energy Department wants to reduce the high cost of capturing carbon dioxide from flue gas.

Awarded several months ago, the grants ranged from $20,000 to $200,000 and came from the DOE's Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Other Minority Institutions program.
