Grambling State urges faculty, staff, students, alums, friends to vote daily (493 hits)

Grambling State University is in a nationwide competition to win $50,000. Allstate’s “Quotes for Education” contest includes historically black colleges and universities from across the nation, and the HBCU with the most votes will win the money.

“We can do this if we pull together to make it happen,” said Jordan Harvey, Student Government Association president and a senior business major at the university. “When Gramblinites pull together, we can make anything happen.”

“With state funds dwindling, we can use all the help we can get, and this would be a wonderful way to help us help our students,” added President Frank G. Pogue. “I encourage everyone to vote daily, even on the weekends.”

Allstate Insurance and The Tom Joyner Foundation unleashed the “Quotes for Education” initiative earlier this month with the goal of raising at least $200,000 for scholarships for HBCU students. There are two ways to participate. Grambling State faculty, staff, students, alumni and supporters are urged to vote online and to use smartphones and other mobile devices. The contest requires a valid email address. Grambling State supporters can visit www.allstatequotesforeducation.com or www.gram.edu to participate.

The “Quotes for Education” program started in 2009 to ease the financial burden on African American students and their families. Though the contest does not require it, participants can get insurance quotes by providing an email address and a zip code. For every quote, Allstate will donate $10 to the foundation. Allstate anticipates 15,000 people will participate, meaning that Grambling State University must push votes daily. The contest continues through the end of November, specifically at 11:59:59 p.m. CENTRAL TIME on November 30.

The university has been among the top five HBCU vote tallies since the contest started. Pogue and Harvey said they would coordinate faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends to garner as many votes as possible each day, week and month. “Keep checking our website for updates,” said Pogue. “And vote online and on your phone every day,” added Harvey.
